Judge blocks Missouri 8-week abortion ban

Hello ThatOwlWoman,

And, knowing this, Republicans make laws that force a consultation followed by a waiting period before the procedure can take place. This means that the trip must be made at least two times. Once again separating the poor from the rich. And forcing people to waste a bunch of money and time, burning up more fuel, releasing more carbon, taking more time off from work, reducing American efficiency and productivity. Adding to highway travel, increasing traffic density with unnecessary trips, increasing the risk of accidents and fatalities, burning up tires and brakes needlessly, adding pointless mileage onto vehicles. What a waste.

gosh, women have to think twice before killing their children?......how barbaric!.......

Right. It's how Republicans are growing a stronger 'Demographic Party.'

To paraphrase all those Build-the-Wall Reichwingers who tell those who are outraged by the treatment of ppl in the detention centers to take in an illegal or two in their own home: Don't pretend to care about the precious fetuses unless you've adopted at least one unwanted child yourself.

I am good with abortion up to around 20 weeks, but I wonder if you lot are aware that most of mainland Europe has a 12 week limit? Probably not as that would require a curiosity few seem to possess amongst so-called Progressives.

Washington (CNN)A federal judge on Tuesday blocked a Missouri law banning abortions after eight weeks from going into effect.

"The various sections specifying prohibitions on abortions at various weeks prior to viability cannot be allowed to go into effect on August 28, as scheduled," writes Judge Howard Sachs in an 11-page opinion.
"However formulated, the legislation on its face conflicts with the Supreme Court ruling that neither legislative or judicial limits on abortion can be measured by specified weeks or development of a fetus; instead, 'viability' is the sole test for a State's authority to prohibit abortions where there is no maternal health issue," Sachs wrote.

Tuesday's ruling comes after two other federal judges blocked similar abortion restrictions in Arkansas and Ohio earlier this summer, as the slew of state laws looking to challenge Roe v. Wade, the 1973 landmark ruling legalizing abortion nationwide, make their way through the courts.

The Missouri law in question would penalize medical professionals who perform abortions after eight weeks into a pregnancy -- before many women know that they are pregnant, and well before the 24-week viability standard established by Roe -- with up to 15 years in prison. The law does not include exceptions for instances of rape or incest, only for instances of "medical emergency," such to prevent a pregnant woman's death or "substantial and irreversible physical impairment."

Planned Parenthood, the American Civil Liberties Union and Paul, Weiss -- the law firm that argued in support of legalizing same-sex marriage in a landmark Supreme Court case -- filed the case last month.

The law would ban abortion outright should the Supreme Court overturn Roe. It also includes bans on abortion at 14, 18 and 20 weeks, which could go into effect if a court finds the eight-week ban invalid.

Except that you're totally wrong. Missouri's anti-abortion law was *not* the will of the people. It was enacted by an all-(R) legislature. BTW, Missouri voters have passed several voter referendums in the past -- one banning puppy mills, one voting down a "Right to Work" law in the state, and the most recent one legalizing medicinal marijuana. And just guess what the all-(R) legislature has done/is trying to do? Overturn these. The puppy mill one was totally eviscerated. They are still periodically trying to ram Right to Work down the citizens' throats. And they are currently trying to abolish medicinal MJ. So don't whine to us about your stupid activist judge shit.

I was not aware of that, no. Thanks for the link.

It's kind of apples and oranges here since the topic is what U.S. law is; not international.

In the UK the current limit is 24 weeks, which many think is too much as viability, due to technical advances, is now possible at 21 weeks. The vast majority of abortions, around 91% or so, happen in the first trimester in the UK at least.

That 91% is the same for the U.S. It's interesting that since 2006, the rate of abortion (per 1,000 women) has been steadily decreasing. Mostly that's due to increased access to b.c. Watch for the rate to begin to climb though, if conservatives are successful in limiting access to b.c. along with abortion.

Voters, white men most of all, are never, ever, under any circumstances allowed to use the ballot box to exercise their opinion of a woman's reproductive organs.

Particularly since we know this has nothing to do with the "sanctity of life" and everything to do with a warped, militant pseudo-Christian view of the proper hierarchy of society and women's role in it.
