I don't believe POTUS wants to "play politics", nor, IMO, should he.

One judge is unilaterally declaring the separation of powers null and void and he's getting help.

It's a judicial coup.
 
If the Supreme Court rules against the administration or delays a decision, the administration might pursue further legal action or adjust its strategy.

Conversely, if the stay is granted, the legal fight could shift to a longer appeals process.
