Since this was the Chief Justice's first time administering the Presidential Oath of Office, you'd think he would have brushed up on it a bit more.
But then again, who can be sure if he was familiar with this esoteric pledge? After all, we only dust it off every four years, right?
And it's only specifically written (verbatim) in the Constitution--which is only the Supreme Law of the Land--for which he is only the highest government official charged with its regular interpretation and enforcement!
Watching the video again, I'm not sure Obama "blanked" as TMZ calls it. I think he may have been trying to hint Roberts to give it another try, but didn't want to cause a scene by contradicting his reading of it. But I guess it could have been either.
Have there been other screwed up Presidential oaths that anyone knows of or can recall?
Instead of listening to the news digested by the media, I witnessed the swearing in first hand and the mistake was CLEARLY Obama's. He couldn't remember what Justice Roberts said and had to have Roberts repeat it to him. Another item being spun by the spin machine. How unusual.
FALSE, Obama knew the correct words even though Roberts said them incorrectly. That was why Obama hesitated!

Now where's the apology Mr. Adam Weinberg?
If he was so sure, then why did he hesitate? Sounds kind of weak to me.![]()
Thank you for the formality, but I've got nothing to apologize for. Roberts clearly misstated the Presidential Oath of Office. The problem started with him.
If I were Obama and I had waited a very long time to make this oath, and I heard it backward and upside down as he did, I'd flinch myself.
I don't know what you're talking about.
Why are you so afraid that Obama could make a mistake? Are you so head- over-heels into the cultish nature of this election that you can't imagine the "One" making some minor slip? Did you really think that the oceans would begin to fall. Manna might fall from heaven? And goodness and mercy would flow from his fingertips? Relax. It's OK. This is a very minor bump in the road. Let's hope that's the worst he ever does.
If you view it again, this is what you will see: 1) The President, appearing slightly nervous, begins to speak before the Chief Justice finishes the rest of the sentence. 2) The President cannot recall, the full (2nd) sentence spoken by Roberts. Roberts then repeats a slightly different version of the sentence, but the President then repeats the original sentence. 3) Once again, a little bit nervous, the President stumbles slightly on the 3rd sentence.
In the scheme of things, not very important. But, I just noticed that the Dow is down 200 points. The Dow must have made a mistake...

I doubt he was negligent. He probably practiced for hours and then still got it wrong and will be smacking his forehead in regret whenever he thinks about it until the day he dies. You must be new here. I'm head over heels with the Constitution and our important traditions not being screwed up by negligent people.
Not that I remember. It could be one of those things they just didn't report though.
Long ago, back in JFK days they didn't report on sexual shenanigans either...

Sometimes people, even with the best intentions, are simply imperfect.
