Partisans support the party no matter what. The GOP rank and file rejected 'the party' but kept the name of the party. In other words, Trump reformulated the GOP---for better or worse. We used Trump to kick our side of the establishment to the curb.
Democrats would do well to do the same, but that means kicking the left to the curb and I don't see it happening anytime soon.

Run for or be President? There is a difference. Anyone can run for President provided they meet the 3 qualifications in the Constitution. Being able to run and being qualified to hold the position aren't the same thing.
If Democrats thought less than one term in the U.S. Senate was enough for Obama to be qualified to BE President, why didn't they pick Joe Biden? He had been there 12x as long. The Democrats, by the standards they use to defend Obama being qualified, didn't pick the most qualified person. They picked the most qualified BLACK person. Joe Biden, with all his experience, knew he couldn't beat someone whose primary "qualification" is something he was born with. At least half of him was born with it. The other half was white trash.
Donald Trump became qualified to RUN for President when he turned 35 years old. He was born here and had met the residency requirement by that age, too.

I don't consider the standards to be different for officials and candidates. If someone is going to appear on my ballot, they better be qualified (i.e. experienced/educated/knowledgeable enough) enough to potentially succeed in that office. A candidate for district judge should be able to actually sit on the district bench, and not just some clown seeking attention.
