The press dealt with Reagan with kid gloves. They knew he was suffering dementia. Leslie Stahl has a story about how she visited Reagan in the White House during his final year in office. He was having a hard time remembering who she was and had asked her name several times during their chat. And when he began to stare off into space, an aide escorted her out.

She knew it was in bad taste to tell people at the time. She wanted to, and she knew that America deserved to know, but she decided not to.
