Just got an email from CNN about this very sad news. How fortunate we were to have such a mensch as our leader. We will not see his like again.

May the gods grant him an easy journey, and give peace to his loved ones.

Jimmy Carter to begin receiving hospice care

God's speed President Carter! The one word that would describe him is decent?!! My life and career in the federal government would have been a lot better if had gotten re-elected?!! Reagan was a total cluster fuck for government worker?!!

CNN —
Former US President Jimmy Carter will begin receiving hospice care, according to a statement from The Carter Center on Saturday.

“After a series of short hospital stays, former US President Jimmy Carter today decided to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care instead of additional medical intervention. He has the full support of his family and his medical team,” the statement said.

Carter turned 98 years old last year.

This is a breaking story and will be updated.

Carter debated Reagan. Reagan, scumbag he was, lied like hell. Carter held up a document with US budget and said Reagan was lying. Didn't matter. Reagan kept lying.

"I have the statistics right here in my hand. You are just wrong." --Carter, clearly exasperated that Reagan continued to shamelessly lie.

"But But But he had the best of intentions!" certainly applies to Carter.

But sadly the quality of his work consistently sucked, Habitat for Humanity being a glaring exception.

Carter was prescient on the need to wean ourselves off foreign oil, energy efficiency, and to develop alternatives. America's reliance of foreign oil has arguably been America's most significant Achilles heel.

The Camp David agreement ranks in the upper tier of presidential foreign policy accomplishments, a major achievement of diplomatic skill, and a hugely successful foreign policy accomplishment. Egypt has never attacked Israel, or vice versa, in the half century since Camp David.

But my favorite thing about Jimmy Carter was he brought a vision of moral clarity to the American presidency that no one before him had ever done. He elevated human rights and human dignity as a core value in our foreign policy.

Prior to Carter, presidential foreign policy was largely based on a cynical Cold War calculation that no matter how evil a foreign leader was, as long as they were anti-communist we were going to back them to the hilt. And in that way, Carter ultimately changed the nature of the American presidency for all time. Ronald Reagan would have totally gotten away with covertly funding a civil war in Nicaragua, and giving tacit support to rightwing death squads in El Salvador, if Carter had not made the nation take stock of how our values and morality were intersecting with our foreign policy.
