Jim Carrey... jealous much?

I love The Truman Show. I like to joke that it was Carrey's warning to the world about the evils of Wrealty TV before it got really big.

That said, he'll never be remembered as a great actor it anything...

Nonsense...his portrayal of Andy Kaufman in "Man on the Moon" was spectacular!

Jesus fucking christ, can't someone even disagree with you about whether or not a comedian is funny??? Everything with you is BULLShit, AS STATED, THiS iS FACT. Did you ever hear of people having different tastes, likes, and dislikes? You must be a load of fun to go to a movie with. I used to date someone who if he didn't like the movie, would want to leave and would torture me till I would. I got rid of him. You know what he is today? Some other woman's problem.

Yes, he most certainly can disagree. Will you ever stop reading emotion into everything? Are you so fucking retarded that you haven't figured out after many years of posting on the same board that I use swear words and am not hostile when I do? You are such a joy to be around that guy is the luckiest on the planet. Everything is a fight to you.

I've never been a big Jim Carrey fan. His comedy is just to syrupy and sappy for me, much like I found Jerry Lewis to be. Now, this doesn't mean he's not a great comedian, just that his style doesn't appeal to everyone. To me, comedy is about so much more than being silly and goofy, and we can contrast someone like Carrey with a comedian like Adam Sandler, who doesn't have to resort to goofy and silly to be funny. I am sure there are some people who can't stand Adam Sandler, but think Carrey is a comedic genius, but again, this is a matter of taste and what we personally like or don't like. Both have had successful careers in comedy by any standard.

For years, I thought Jim Carrey was one-dimensional, he was great in The Mask, but it seemed every role following that, was the same character, just playing a different role. In Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind, Carrey impressed me by being more than one-dimensional, he actually showed he could act, and did a very good job with the role. Plus, you have to admire anyone who could bag Jenny McCarthy.

But to me, the real issue here is not Jim Carrey, or whether he is a good or bad comedian, it's the ongoing obsession we seem to have with these people and their political views. Someone once pointed out, these are the people who, in the olden days, were the court jesters, hired to entertain the king's court. Jokers! Yet we have somehow elevated them to status of importance when it comes to politics.

Carrey and Sandler have both made some of my favorite comedies of the recent past, such as The Truman Show and The Waterboy. I quote Waterboy all the freaking time, and during football season, I inform everyone who asks that I'm "watching foosball," and that "foosball is the devil!" I really liked Carrey's live-action Grinch movie, and it is a permanent part of my Christmas movie list (I like it better than the classic animated film, which most people prefer and I'm not that into).

Both have also made terrible movie entries. Sandler's best stuff was in the 90s, as he also did Happy Gilmore, which is another iconic role of his. I appreciate the fact that Carrey has branched off and done more serious stuff. Generally, I do like Carrey, and have more respect for him as an actor than Sandler. Cable guyyyyyy!!!

.

I'm not a fan of either, but I LOVE Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. That is one of my favorite movies. The one Sandler movie I like is The Wedding Singer.

As you say, everyone has their own views on these things. Isn't it nice that in America we are free to enjoy/not enjoy any entertainer? Rather than having some supreme commander, some real prick I am picturing if you know what I mean? ordering us who to find funny? I certainly think so.

adam sandler not silly?

have you seen any of his movies for real?

Oh, he can be silly and sappy, just like Jim Carrey! But he doesn't have to be and he doesn't rely on this, the way Carrey seems to at times. Adam Sandler could do a dissertation of a Greenspan speech and have people rolling in the floors. He has a way of delivery and timing that is just funny, it doesn't matter, he doesn't even have to try, it just comes out that way. In the movie, Spanglish, he attempted to play a more serious role, and it was, but he was still very funny.

I am a big Adam Sandler fan, I like him in all his movies, he makes me laugh. I can't say that for every comedian, and I just often find Jim Carrey to be more annoying than funny. I never liked Jerry Lewis' comedy for the same reason, he just wasn't that funny to me.

I have found Sandler funny, but he can't act. Carrey can at least do that, and has demonstrated it more in recent years.

Yes, it is.

It's also nice to be able to enjoy the artistic creativity of others, in spite of political views. By nature, any kind of art is going to challenge status quo, authority, conventional wisdom. This puts almost all of it in the 'liberal' perspective, by it's very nature. I can 'excuse' an artist being liberal, and still enjoy his work as an artist. The best example of this I have, is the song by the Dixie Chicks, Not Ready to Make Nice. I completely disagree with them politically, but that song conveyed an emotion and did it with passion, and I respect that in art. It turns me off for actors or singers to 'speak out' on issues... fucking create some art and express it! That's your purpose and intent, and relevance to our culture!

I like opinions, and ideas. I want every single person to express themselves, as often & vocally as they can.

Why should actors & singers be any different?

I think his acting is fine, and Carrey can act as well. Neither of them are Seth Grogan or Johnny Knoxville! lol

Sandler vs. Carrey is an interesting discussion, I personally like Sandler's comedy style better than Carrey's. As for serious acting, maybe Carrey has the edge, just because of Eternal Sunshine, but other than this, I haven't seen him act in a serious role. Now, the master comedian in a serious role, has got to be Robin Williams! By HIS standard, both Sandler and Carrey totally suck.

Because they have access to the media that everyone else doesn't have. They are provided this access because they are creative artists, not because they are politicians or lawmakers. Their use of such access, should be confined to promoting their art, which can certainly contain any 'political' message they want. Anything other than this, is exploiting their advantage over others, in order to advance their political agenda.

Now this goes on with both sides, but again, by their very nature, most creative artists are liberal.

That's a suggested limit on free speech that I just don't agree with, or get. Laura Ingraham wrote "Shut Up & Sing" about that - what makes her or any other pundit more "qualified" to render an opinion to a large audience than any entertainer? Nothing. It's all just opinions.

As for their having "more access" to the media, that's just something that comes w/ the territory of their career choice & success. I don't see why they should put a lid on their opinions simply because they've achieved that.

So basically you want to limit the free speech of artists, declare corporations people, and their money free speech?

Okay.

Okay.

That's not at all what I said, is it?

I don't care if artists express their free speech rights, it offends me that they exploit their status to tell me what they think, instead of doing so through their art. I have much more admiration for artists who stay away from the press conferences and interviews, and either express their views in their work, or actually take the initiative to do like Bono, and DO something.

I didn't declare corporations people, the SCOTUS did, and I agree with their decision. Corporations are comprised of people, and they deserve their rights regardless of their corporate status, just as unions and political action groups do. We have the "right of assembly" in our Constitution, which means you can't strip assemblies known as "corporations" from their Constitutional rights.

I didn't suggest a LAW. I said it SHOULD be... the artist SHOULD do this, and I would respect them. Does that compute in your retard brain? I'm not a Fascist who thinks the whole world should live by my declaration of belief.

I agree with Inraham's title, Shut up and Sing! In THIS context... You are an artist, you have a talent, it is your calling, use it anyway you please to convey your viewpoints and deliver something we can find appreciation in and potentially be moved by your message. Don't use the status of your fame as an artist to lecture me and pontificate on Oprah and The View, make a movie, write a song! I can respect art, I can't respect self-righteous blowhards who are exploiting their advantages over others.

In my experience, most people who avoid giving an opinion have no thoughts to speak of.

I said you were suggesting a limit - not mandating a law. And you were.

As for Ingraham, again - what makes her more qualified to render an opinion? At what level of fame should someone keep their opinions to themselves? Do we only want politicians & the punditry to speak their opinions...because they're somehow more qualified to have them?

OMG I can't believe there's someone besides me who doesn't like Jerry Lewis. That's like being un-American.
