Disgraced televangelist Jim Bakker claims Hurricane Harvey was God’s “judgment” on the city of Houston, where the storm killed at least 60 and left thousands homeless.
And naturally, he used his gloom-and-doom scenario as part of a sales pitch to sell his buckets of instant apocalypse food.
“I have felt ― and I was afraid to share it with anybody ― that this flood is from God,” he said on Monday in a clip posted online by Right Wing Watch. “It’s a judgment on America somehow.”
His guest, “prophet” Rick Joyner, agreed.
“We have to stand up against the perversion of our times and call it what it is,” Joyner said.
At various points in the segment, as they spoke of Houston and God’s wrath, Bakker brought out buckets of food on sale for $175.
“Just remember, God gets the last word,” Bakker warned. “God gets the last word. Be not deceived, God is not mocked.”
Bakker built a Christian TV empire worth $180 million in the 1980s, but resigned in shame after a sex scandal and eventually served four years in prison for fraud.
He has since remade himself as a doomsday preacher hawking survivalist food and other prepper supplies to help Christians survive an upcoming “tribulation” period that will supposedly last for several years.

Yes, I have bad memories of Jim Bakker.

Only thing correct here is that yes, we are a nation under judgment.

I have a close friend who did time in Federal prison with the Taggart brothers. They were part of Jim Bakker's organization.

Jim took the fall. The Taggart boys swore Tammy Faye was the brains behind the operation.

All TV preachers are con people

Nope. That's as silly as saying something like "all liberals are idiots." While both statements are mostly true.neither are entirely true. I've met some genuinely smart liberals and a couple of genuinely sincere preachers who happen to preach on TV.

organized religion is full of sociopathic con men and women.

Once again, nope. Not even close. While there are some who certainly use religion for their earthly gain, most (in other words it "is full of" people like this) are simply doing their best to follow the teaching of scripture.

stop letting someone else tel you what Jesus meant

So stop listening to me who Jesus said should tell others His gospel message? Mmm... I think he wants men and women to tell others His message. Mk. 16:15. He set "evangelists" in the church for that purpose. Eph. 4:11

USE YOUR HEART NOT THEIR POWER to know Jesus

But my heart (nor my conscience) is a safe guide. While the OT doesn't govern my life today I do recognize that it was written for my education or "learning." (Rom. 15:4). The OT as well as the NT teaches me following my heart isn't a safe path in life. Jer. 10:23 et al...

I took the time to respond to someone who is never going to agree with me for one reason. Blanket statements that begin with words like "All..." are rarely if ever accurate. I got a little carried away in my response.

Morning Joe had a good discussion about how many of the evangelists (I'm guessing here he meant the prominent on TV type), even Hispanic ones, are still standing with Trump because of the access they have. Most disagree with his DACA stance but are taking credit for the 6 months to get something done.

Anyway, what I found interesting was the discussion that took place towards the end of that segment about the difference between those who just claim the name Christian and those who seemingly are trying to live it. One guy used church attendance (I would actually go beyond just that as an indicator of faithful Christians) on one poll. While 81% of white folks who claim to be Christians supported Trump over Clinton, a similar number of people claiming to be Christians "who actually attended church services every week" supported Cruz over Trump in the primary.

My point is that the Bakkers and the Robertsons and the Olsteens are not the true face of Christianity in this country no more than the Bubba from Alabama is the typical gun owner in this country. But those are the faces you see on the news. Those are the ones many liberals pounce on...and rightly so...when they do their stupid stuff. But don't try to lump the, in as "all Christians"" because that's not even close to the truth.

If you can, try to find that Morning Joe segment on YouTube or as a transcript sometime later. I can't find it in its entirety yet but it was the best discussion I've ever seen about Christians and how that name is misapplied.

And Bill, this guy is absolutely a huckster.

they are all con people

Organized religion is the perfect scaffolding for a sociopathic con person to climb

its tailor made to get people to give you money for nothing
