Poor thing....I can understand their predicament though. They have over 100,000,000 people and almost no arable land.
They like the taste. They aren't doing it for the protein. Whale is like a beefier version of beef.
Japan is pretty much the biggest seafood market in the world, especially after all their local fisheries were ended by the Fukushima disaster. All the huge prices paid for Bluefin tuna (up to 2 Million US dollars) are due to Japanese demand.
They are also the entire market for elvers or glass eels, paying up to $1000 per pound for baby eels, then growing them out in tanks. Nuke the baby whales for Jesus!

In the United States of America, whaling is carried out by nine different indigenous Alaskan communities. The whaling program is managed by the Alaska Eskimo Whaling Commission which reports to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The hunt takes around 50 bowhead whales a year from a population of about 10,500 in Alaskan waters. Conservationists fear this hunt is not sustainable, though the IWC Scientific Committee, the same group that provided the above population estimate, projects a population growth of 3.2% per year. The hunt also took an average of one or two gray whales each year until 1996. The quota was reduced to zero in that year due to sustainability concerns. A future review may result in the gray whale hunt being resumed. Bowhead whales weigh approximately 5–10 times as much as minke whales.[SUP][35][/SUP]
The Makah tribe in Washington State also reinstated whaling in 1999, despite protests from animal rights groups. They are currently seeking to resume whaling of the gray whale,[SUP][36][/SUP] a right recognized in the Treaty of Neah Bay.
All catches in 2003–2007 were Bowhead whales.

In fact, at least 12 other countries continue to hunt whales. Capt. Fucknut of Sea Shepard is a true coward, committing criminal acts which any country other than Japan would respond to with violence, likely sinking his ship at a minimum.
Think of France's response to Greenpeace for an example of how a European or North American country would react to active attacks on their merchant fleets. The US recently showed exactly how they deal with pirates; deathly dispatch.

This reminds me of what I cleverly termed the Makah Whaling Adventure that took place in WA back in 1999. The Makah tribe wanted their traditional whale hunt and liberals got all pissy with them.
