Jan 1 2016 - New law forces CA to give "participation diplomas" to high schoolers

A participation diploma is not a diploma in Oklahoma. It is much less. If you are going to require kids to pass tests to graduate then ate the way it needs to be.

That said, I don't think a kid should have to pass an Algebra test in order to get a high school diploma. After teaching for a lot of years I can tell you that there are about 5% or so of students who will never pass that test. Are we going to further handicap them by denying them a high school diploma, which they will need for most any job, when they can (and do much of the time) go on to be productive citizens?

See, this is why teachers should run the schools.

Well hell, there's also kids that can never read at more than a third grade level no matter how hard they work at it. Do we give them a diploma too.

HUH??? What part of the moon do you live on?? This has been going on for 50 years. Whites and asians are told they have pass the tests while blacks and illegal hispanics are told "just TRY to learn and we'll take care of you".

Like you know what goes on in schools, things have changed since you graduated third grade.

That's the worst idea i ever heard. We need to go private schools where parents can pick what school their kids go to. Competition always improves things. THINK

Why is letting teachers have more input into how children are taught "the worst idea"? You know, there are teachers at private schools.

The teachers don't care about the kids.. That's true at all schools public and private. But at private schools, management has no choice but to force the teachers to do a good job. That's competition, something you never see in public schools. THINK

Well $&@#, there's also kids that can never read at more than a third grade level no matter how hard they work at it. Do we give them a diploma too.

Yes, if you can give them the skills to overcome their disability and become a productive citizen. As a math teacher I will assure you though that reading is much more needed by the average person in society than advanced algebra.
