Israel has held its largest military drill in years, simulating war with an unnamed “challenging and responsive” enemy amid heightened tensions between the US and Iran, a conflict it has long cheered from the sidelines.

While Israeli intelligence is believed to be the source of the ultra-vague tip the Pentagon used as its rationale to send the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier group to the Persian Gulf, the usual bellicose rhetoric has been largely absent from the PM’s office. Netanyahu broke his silence to weigh in on the drill, however.

Israel says it has fired at Lebanon in response to missile launches

Israel’s military said it has fired on targets in southern Lebanon, responding to several anti-tank missiles launched towards an Israeli army base and vehicles in the north.

The military gave no further details on whether the incoming missiles had caused any damage, but said a “number of hits have been confirmed”.

Lebanon’s pro-Hezbollah TV channel, al-Mayadeen, cited the militant group as saying the attack had destroyed a “military vehicle” in the northern Israel town of Avivim. The news channel added there were “deaths and injuries”, something Israel did not confirm.

This is mentioned as a foil to the inevitable reports of ' poor Izraeli settlers cowering in shelters ' and a reminder that Izrael wants the US to do the heavy lifting for ' Izrael's security '.
