I was less making an argument as explaining that I personally don't understand the convention or what good it does.

The more things that are unnecessarily illegal, the more we unnecessarily create criminals, I would think.
As for this specific issue, I've admittedly made no effort to research its history.

Pundits have been pondering why Trump's popularity among young white males has risen. ^ ^ ^ That's why. They admire a "strong man" who can just grab whatever he wants w/o repercussions -- esp. women. He appeals to weak, beta males who envy that kind of behavior but don't dare try it.

Yes. Particularly in certain Catholic Latin American countries.

I met a couple of American college guys in Venezuela, and they said people yelled at them when they were walking around town shirtless. The only place it is acceptable for men to be shirtless was the beach.

Social conventions evolve. Most Abrahamic religion-based ones have to deal with sex, avoiding rape, avoiding temptation and avoiding lust. I support having no rules at all except "Don't hurt anyone". If we did that, then how do we use legal means to prosecute a person who keeps shitting in the middle of the sidewalk? Ergo, rules are necessary for the mutual protection of people.

Agreed 100%. This is easily seen by the behavior of JPP MAGAts. Notice all are small-minded men living in so much fear that they hate people who are different; specifically anyone who is not a Euro-American male. They have no concern about the rights of those different than themselves.
