As much as I hate to admit it, Taichiliberal has presented solid arguments in his thread regarding the ongoing nuclear power debacle. It is obvious to me that the risk associated with nuclear power vastly outweighs any benefit.

That said, I also don't believe we should waste billions of dollars on wind and solar plants. IMO, we need to focus on clean coal technology and increase investment in research of fusion, the latter being a long-term, safe, clean alternative to nuclear fission plants.

That ultimately remains to be seen. If anything this quake illustrates that a modern (well somewhat) nuclear plant can survive all but the most powerful of natural disasters and with proper planning, even those can be pretty much benign. Besides, there are no other alternatives, unless you plan to raise Tesla from the grave to solve the problem, as he's the only person who could.

I've had him on IA for a long time because he's never had a solid argument. You're obviously lying, not to mention a complete woosie for falling to the liberal mantra.
 
I agree with the OP. I no longer see nukes as a viable option for our long-term needs. What's happening in Japan is a real eye-opener.

Fusion has some real promise. I also wouldn't dismiss wind energy, or solar - the technologies will continue to improve in those areas. Natural gas & domestic drilling are definitely part of the equation.

But no more nukes...

that is the same type of knee jerk reaction many had to deep sea drilling.

Nuclear is still one of the safer methods and most certainly cleaner methods of energy production. That said, building nuclear plants on or near fault lines, probably isn't a good idea.

Perhaps, the above is certainly debatable, I would personally prefer the shift to nat gas as the source of energy for our transportation industry.
