Black Californians have the lowest rate of college graduation among all ethnic groups and are less educated than their parents, according to a new study by a group calling on state lawmakers to get serious about helping African Americans.

"The State of Blacks in Higher Education in California," released Thursday by the Campaign for College Opportunity, offers a dismal set of findings:

-- 32 percent of black Californians who attended college dropped out, more than any other group, according to 2011 U.S. census data.

-- 30 percent of black Californians aged 25 to 34 have an associate's or bachelor's degree. By contrast, 35 percent of those aged 35 to 44 have a degree, as do 33 percent of those aged 45 to age 54.

-- Although 6 percent of all college-age Californians are black, black students are overrepresented at expensive, for-profit colleges: 10 percent; and at community colleges: 7 percent. They are underrepresented at the University of California: 4 percent; and California State University: 5 percent.

-- Nearly 24 percent of black Californians have degrees compared with 41 percent of white Californians, although the rate for black adults is better than their 18 percent rate in 2000.

How dumb do you have to be that you cannot even beat out the illegals from Mexico, that cannot even speak English, and still come out on the bottom of the list.

BS

See what I mean folks...?

I read the same article this morning. What I found most depressing is this idea that we are going to find a policy solution to this problem. Change in this case has to start at home. Parents have to make education a priority in their households. And if we are going to be real the attitude that some have that doing well in school is 'trying to act white' does nothing to further educational advancement in the community.

My comment was targeted towards StormX's denial of soley being a racist. Look, I live in California and the statistics are not surprising because there are multiple issues that needs to be addressed. Also, this idea of associating educating oneself with "acting white" is a misnomer you're actually thinking blacks think like that? Change doesn't start just at home but the school districts, teachers, jobs, socioeconomic status. All elements effect the living situations of various individuals. It's hard for people here to understand because people here don't want to understand.

I witnessed black classmates in high school being told 'why are you trying to act white' when they did well. This wasn't an everyday occurrence or anything close mind you but it was there. And you'll hear people in the black community talk about it. It's challenging enough growing up with peer pressure as all kids do but the thought that one is essentially 'selling out' by doing well only makes it harder.

Change occurs at all the places you listed but the biggest change starts at home. If you have a bad home environment where education is not emphasized your chances to succeed are far behind your classmates. That's just reality and unfortunately we have seen it played out for years an decades in urban communities.

Tell me, do you argue with the raving maniacs on street corners?

In the real world I can expect the raving maniac to act because in the real world I'm not there to mitigate wreckless behavior, but here where I assume adults agree to disagree, this is supposed to be a "controlled" environment yet when people make racist remarks or create threads for purposes of trolling. I guess people like Storm have their uses, seeing as to how not too many people post. But when I see threads like "black nationalism" and certain members who are banned and who identify as black, can't defend themselves I am lead to believe there is a bias. To be honest I thought this was a place adults can respectfully disagree, but this is merely a place to complain about liberals and black people.

Well the problem with the urban communities circulating the idea of education and whiteness has to do with oppression and the inferiority complex. Everything grammatically sound and articulated is seen as white, and urban slang and colloquialism is "talking black." The same with aesthetics. Blacks fight over dark and light skin and which looks better and most accepted feature thus far is fair skin. So as I said before there are multiple elements at play. I mean, you guys focused on blacks but Hispanics don't fair better. A lot of the immigrants don't have education and although some push their kids towards higher learning, a lot of hispanic kids are having kids themselves forcing themselves to go on welfare and living at home and not learning no adult responsibility. It's not just about the home as you say, it's what surrounds the home.

Well, my point was that you do not argue with the maniac on the street because it's patently obvious that their ideas do not hold merit. So why do you argue them here?

99% more whites graduated my High School than blacks............................................

Because we only had 1 half black girl in the entire High School............(truth)

It's not just Blacks.
This kind of crab mentality is in all cultures,
I've seen Hispanics and Native Americans act the same way, when someone is trying to break out of that mold.
Where do you think the idea of a crab mentality came from?

No way!

You have seen Indians and Blacks act out as if they had their land taken away from them and they were denied education for decades? I can't imagine why they would act out.

Your vision is so myopic, that you have no clue or ability to stay on task.
I had thought that this was about EDUCATION and the ability to GET AHEAD IN LIFE; but if I missed the part you're now complaining about, please show me.
My comment had to do with individuals trying to better themselves, by getting an education, and having those around them try to stop them from achieving their goals.
Do you really think that a Native American is referring to the fruit, when he calls another Native American an apple.
You know - red on the outside; but white on the inside.

Interesting that StormX. Cawacko and yourself all come from California, well to me anyway.

Didn't take you long to figure it out.
All the mods are young conservatives who either didn't go to college or barley got out. They hate liberals and progress
