I will never forget the first time I clapped eyes on Anjem Choudary, who has been jailed after running rings round British justice for two decades. It was 2006, and we were dozing off in front of Newsnight when I noticed an absurd bearded man jabbing his finger at Jeremy Paxman. By 2050, Britain will be a majority Muslim country. It will be the end of freedom of democracy and submission to God.
Anjem Choudary was on the show with the veteran Labour MP Ann Cryer, who had taken a courageous stand against forced marriage and other barbaric customs in her constituency of Keighley, West Yorkshire. The hate preacher was busy explaining how Islam could civilise people in the UK. Paxman rolled his eyes. Then, with his characteristic snort, he suggested that Choudary clearly disliked this country so: “Off you go, then, matey.” “Britain belongs to Allah,” Choudary replied. Ann Cryer was incensed. With perfect Northern bluntness, she told him: “You’re a very, very rude man, Mr Choudary.”
Both these responses to the man soon to become a celebrated pantomime villain were wonderfully British. Paxman’s jokey “Go and live somewhere else” was plain common sense (although it’s probably a hate crime by now). Ann Cryer represented all that is best in the national character: forbearance, decency, and charming impotence in the face of embarrassing shouty men hell-bent on world domination. It was like watching a sweet Jewish lady rebuking the author of Mein Kampf by telling him he was a great big meanie. This week, as Choudary was found guilty of inciting Britons to support Isil – and as police linked him to at least 110 British terrorists – that Newsnight debate came back to me.
