It's only a bill containing one really bad idea, that probably won't got anywhere, but....

Florida bill would require bloggers who write about governor to register with the state

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Florida Sen. Jason Brodeur (R-Lake Mary) wants bloggers who write about Gov. Ron DeSantis, Attorney General Ashley Moody, and other members of the Florida executive cabinet or legislature to register with the state or face fines.

Brodeur’s proposal, Senate Bill 1316: Information Dissemination, would require any blogger writing about government officials to register with the Florida Office of Legislative Services or the Commission on Ethics.

In the bill, Brodeur wrote that those who write “an article, a story, or a series of stories,” about “the Governor, the Lieutenant Governor, a Cabinet officer, or any member of the Legislature,” and receives or will receive payment for doing so, must register with state offices within five days after the publication of an article that mentions an elected state official.

If another blog post is added to a blog, the blogger would then be required to submit monthly reports on the 10th of each month with the appropriate state office. They would not have to submit a report on months when no content is published.

What's wrong with it?

The idea that the government can force you to register to exercise your rights online.

It's somewhat odd that the issue isn't obvious.

Why? The govt forces registration to exercise other rights. Is this one sacrosanct?

I have no problem requiring paid lobbyists to be transparent, which is what this is about

If you are taking money to push a political position, be transparent, and come forward and admit you are a hired entity, not simply a concerned citizen

What is this fascist pig's rationale for the bill? Is it to dampen criticism, perhaps? Create a database of dissenters? Gee, why would that be important?

Why?

why am I ok with government regulating commerce?

or why am I ok with government outing phony support as grassroot activty, when it is paid propaganda?

Both apply - which do you need clarity on

Commerce is not the same as speech.

Why is it only bloggers? Why doesn't it pertain to Fox's broadcasts, hmm? Or MSNBC's? Why would there even be an assumption that someone writing an opinion piece critical of govt. is associated with nefarious others?

In reality, the purpose is to stifle criticism.

this is about commerce - lobbyists being paid

the only reason to worry is you want to pretend you aren't a paid lobbyist but just a blogger concerned

you don't think lobbyists on tv have regulations?

But the owl lady wants a database of gun owners monitored by the govt. It's funny what they rail about and what they don't. It's almost as if their opinions flow with the political winds. There isnt a substantive base to them.

Trying to control the press is not very American

No more than the govt controlling gun owners by making them register. It's not govt control you have a problem with it's govt controlling things you like that piss you off.

How does blogger = lobbyist? You do realize that some bloggers get paid by clicks, right? So how does that make them a lobbyist? Again, why is Fox not required to register and report income received from stories they present?

I noticed that the source of any income isn't mentioned; they want to know the amounts. The effect of this bill is strictly to stifle criticism and dampen reporting or opinion pieces on govt. officials. If the source isn't require, where's the alleged "transparency"?

How does blogger = lobbyist?

a blogger that is being paid to blog is a lobbyist

You do realize that some bloggers get paid by clicks, right? So how does that make them a lobbyist?

you do realize they can just report that they are making money of this activity and aren't being sent to jail like Obama did with journalists right?

You could not be more accurate with that statement. Nice.
