It didn't necessarily skyrocket

“If somebody wants to build a coal-fired power plant, they can. It’s just that it will bankrupt them,” Obama said, responding to a question about his cap-and-trade plan. He later added, “Under my plan … electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket.”

Of course, cap and trade is long dead. But coal-fired power plants are powering down nationwide, and they are blaming the Obama Environmental Protection Agency. The president’s critics say proposed greenhouse gas regulations for future power plants are designed to cripple the coal industry.

And just like with another 2008 quote — Energy Secretary Steven Chu’s famed call to “figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe” — Republicans say the Chronicle clip shows what’s really in the president’s heart, that high electricity prices and the death of coal have always been Obama’s goal.

Thanks to the natural gas boom Obama failed to deliver on this campaign promise. But suppose he had succeeded. Electric bills would skyrocket [there's no better metaphor] because without the fracking boom there would have been no cheap alternative to coal. Gasoline prices were also kept down due to the fracking boom or we'd be paying $4+/gallon or more. And instead of trying to help consumers, the administration would be doing just the opposite.

Let that sink in.

The middle class and the poor would be the ones affected worst by that. An already sluggish economy would be still be in a deep recession with no hope of pulling out of it. As it turned out, the only victims were people in the coal industry---and they saw it coming. I don't know that Obama carried a single coal producing state. I do know WV turned him down twice and Crooked Hillary stands a snowball's chance in hell of carrying it.

I'm glad he failed.

I applaud the President for helping to put in place the regulations necessary to help the country reduce the amount of coal we burn.

Cons care about the people affected by the policy. Liberals care about the environment.

The sane thing to do would have been to make sure you had a jobs program in place before you killed the industry.

No telling people who have no money to move to another state is not a jobs program.

Dems are really good at replicating the miracle that is detroit.

Of course libtards are against fracking as well. Imagine if they were successful at shutting that industry down.

I look forward to the next president removing the regulations.

Via executive fiat. The precedent has been set.
Hillary won't be removing those regulations, sorry. Pollution isn't worth restoring the coal industry, if that couldn't even happen because of cheap, cleaner natural gas.

You're assuming Hillary won't hyper regulate the fracking industry to appease the Greenies. Which could make coal competitive.

That would be an lol moment.

It won't be competitive, sorry, Montana and Wyoming coal have a better chance to be competitive, it is easier to mine. The abundance of natural gas won't make coal a viable option of the future, just like the horse and buggy, coal has seen its day.

Sorry. But you are wrong. Liberals don't really care about the environment. They are just little followers who do what Obama tells them to. They don't know how to handle freedom so they need to gobblement to care for them.

But don't for a minute believe they care about the environment.

Well, conventional wisdom had us running out of fossil fuels so I guess time will tell.
