The UK, then the Kingdom of Great Britain, deployed a few West Indies troops in a half-hearted effort to thwart the American Revolution.
They were by far the world's preeminent military power at the time,

but one, they were spread thinly,

and two, successful occupation is a hell of a lot harder than successful invasion for anybody including the modern US today.

We then formed a nation among colonies whose ONLY common incentive was to be independent of Britain.
That's why the United States have never been united in their history save for three years of WWII.

Dude, the fucking British Empire wasn't a capitalist nation. It was a monarchy where the King approached all companies. company activities acted with the authority of the King.
