Bin Laden was executed and shot in the face. Does that bother you in any way?
It is, in my opinion, almost impossible to make a snap judgement about the shooting of OBL.
First, the one thing that separates the 'civilised' world from what we 'like' to call the 'uncivilised' world is the rule of law. The law by which we live, both in the US and the UK, states that a man is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Next there are the practical issues. What would have happened had he been brought to trial? Had he been brought to trial, who in the world would have, could have tried him? A precedent might be Nuremberg. Hess, if you remember, was kept alone in Spandau, a symbol of the evil of which man is capable. Could the same have happened with OBL?
As it is, we are TOLD that there was a concensus that the man they found, the man to whom the seals had been led, actually was OBL but the death sentence was not given by any legally constituted court. Indeed we don't actually know (although most believe) that the victim was correctly identified and we are TOLD that DNA proved the case. But at the moment the trigger was pulled what proof was there?
It is easier by far, to go along with this story, but suppose it is not true. We have only third party statements to say that he was the guilt behind the murders.
What was the main source of the evidence? Well it came to us via the previous administration. What was their record of telling the truth? Even their supporters now admit that truth was not ther top priority. Yes the video snippets appear to have been incontravertible, but suppose that was not OBL either. Indeed the only evidence we have that there ever was a man of that name was from his family in Saudi and the usual Saudi records.
Is it not possible that a terrorist organisation found a mentally challenged stooge, held him at gunpoint, and promoted him as the eminence gris of the Middle East? Is it not possible that the body carried out from the house in Abottabad belonged to a stranger?
No, I do not for one minute, believe that, but I am concerned that even in these circumstances the correct procedure was not carried out.
I rejoiced when I heard the news. I thought killing the bastard was too good for him. And then, as I looked on my own doorstep, where the rule of law, as we know it, doesn't really exist and factual reporting of the truth is not always evident, I began to realise that 'they' could have told us anything and we would have believed it.
They told us that Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. They told us he was ready to attack us in our beds. We have been told of countless 'terror threats' none of which actually developed into anything.
We do not have a good record when it comes to being conned. We were happy to believe that smoking was not harmful, but it is. We believe that our governments actually have our best interests at heart, but often they do not, We are told we are free, but no one knows how freedom is defined. We are told we are democracies, another lie.
If he is dead, I am glad he is dead.
