One reason is because they have no clue how German politics works. Liberals were all giddy when Merkel got reelected and didn't realize the significance of the outcome.
And you're right about the other reason - she didn't have her ass groped by Trump or Moore.

But I sense Merkel is a wise, skillful, and benevolent leader; with influence far beyond her formal designation of Germany's chancellor.
Merkel's constructive presence has also been noticed in the E.U., and NATO.
