When I played youth sports, an athlete could "play up" ,IOW, against OLDER, as a rule stronger athletes, but could NEVER "play down", against younger, presumably weaker athletes.

Wem should apply the same principle to female/male athletes; males are presumably STRONGER, as a rule, therefore females could be allowed to complete against similar level males, NOT visa versa.
