Is calling Obama a "chimp" racist?

It is, quite literally, a word used by racists for black people. Adopting such language simply because they do it "too" is no excuse.

Yes. It is racist to call a black man a chimp. It is wrong to call any man a "chimp". But not always racist. However, ignoring historical context doesn't cleanse it of racism.

so meanings never change? it may have been racist at one time, but now, after bush, it is clearly not meant as racist by most people. i have no doubt some will use it as racist, but if you start using X term or picture to describe one president, you lose the argument that you can't use it against another because of how it was used years ago. the image lost connotations of racism with bush.

Years ago? It is still used by racists today.

It was you libs who always said Bush looks like a monkey; is that racist? You tell me.

is bush's case there is a resemblance while calling any black man a variation of a monkey is part of jim crow racism

do try to be more aware of racist history

imo, actually, calling the president a chimp is over the top and disrespectful of the office

retard is also used in a scientific manner as well. however, the word has taken on new connotations. i don't believe everyone using ape pictures with obama has a racist intent. the door was became wide open with bush. to cry foul now just because obama is half black is silly, imo.

as i said in the thread prior to this copycat thread, it is tasteless. but not all cases are racist. just because a few idiot racists still use the term in a racist manner, doesn't mean it is racist for all people. for example - boy. poet ranted and raved how cawacko was a racist for calling hsi black friend boy. boy, in modern vernacular for most people, is not a racist term anymore.

so me talking about the past use of the word is not being aware of racist history? get a grip don.

see post 38 for a more full explanation.

Look since our founding we've lambasted those in power, and there have been political cartoons exaggerating the physical ugliness of those in power. Besides your braying jackasses and dimwitted elephants we've used monkeys/chimps to mock politicians as well. I think it's often been used because the animal retains enough human qualities while being animalistic, and it's the classic caveman look that you want to suggest when calling a politician an idiot, or a lower life form etc.

Many many many people called george bush a monkey, drew him as one, called for his "chimpeachment" etc. This type of criticism has obviously permeated our culture.

Now, with that out of the way, it's also obvious to anyone that's been paying attention that black people have been demeaned, and portrayed as monkeys/apes by racists for a very long time. That's just a fact. So it's probably racially insensitive to use those terms, just because of the history associated with that type of depiction used not just in politics, but for some in everyday life.

And there is no doubt that the racists thought that they at least got a consolation prize when obama was elected when they realized with glee that they could call him a monkey/ape with supposed impunity.

As with all things, context matters, but as a general rule of thumb I would just avoid it. Just call him a dumbass lankey giraffe or something.

My own anecdotal surrounding this is based on one of my favorite simpsons quotes. See here at 1:15 -

http://www.milkandcookies.com/link/60164/detail/

This episode was made during the bush era, and I loved saying this, talking about blowing marijuana smoke in the "presidents stupid monkey face, and he'd just have to sit there groooving on it."

When massachusetts decriminalized weed I said this a few times during my elation, not thinking of obama, just in general quoting the simpsons, before I realized "FUCK, I can't quote the simpsons now because obama is president and people will interpret it wrong :("

i suspect that using the term 'boy' to most blacks would still be racists, intent or not
