Is a compromise likely?

Not certain, but there are rumblings that the GOP and the Democrats in Conngress may pass a Continuing Resolution next week.

What form it may take is uncertain.

After the GOP House bill was rejected by the Senate last week, the GOP had to acknowledge that they cannot force massive cuts without some give and take.

Speaker Boehner says (publicly, at least) that a CR without cuts is unacceptable.

The majority of Republicans privately admit that they fear being blamed a government shutdown, and so they are adopting some of the Democrats' suggestions on what programs and appropriations to cut.

President Obama’s budget proposal for next year includes around $33 billion in program reductions and terminations.

The Democrats, in concert with a lying media, convinced the public that the last shutdown was the fault of the Republicans,....no reason they couldn't pull it off again...

.Nancy and Harry are probably meeting as we speak to hash out how they will place the blame for rising oil and gas prices on George Bush....

No doubt they will blame George Bush for losing
Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, etc. as they fall under the influence of fanatic Muslim rule.

Already, the crap about Egyptian Democracy isn't being touted like it was last week...

Some Democrats actually prefer that the Republicans continue to push deep cuts in federal spending that would lead to a government shutdown.

In 1995 when Newt Gingrich wanted major cuts in Medicare, public health, education and environment, President Clinton vetoed the bill that the Republican-controlled Congress sent to him.

Gingrich then threatened to refuse to raise the debt ceiling, putting the country in danger of default.

Between November 14- November 19, 1995 the government shut down as a reult of the stalemate.

The first budget shutdown was resolved with the passage of a temporary Continuing Resolution, but when it expired, again from December 16, 1995 to January 6, 1996, the government shut down.

The government had to furlough many employees at substantial cost, and many services were unavailable.

Gingrich claimed that he forced the shutdown because the president made him sit in the back of Air Force One. This made a lot of people angry.

Public opinion went against the Republicans and President Clinton won reelection.

President Obama does not want a shutdown, but if it happens, he may benefit in the polls from the same public backlash.

In the final analysis, whether Democrats or the Republicans win the budget fight, America is in for tough times.

I think it is wonderful that a bigoted, retired, American skate knows more about international affairs than the politicians, diplomats and journalists who are actually present.
Why aren't you president?

Now that was pretty funny....had me laughing for 5 minutes....
You sure have a sense of humor, Joe....
Because Clinton was so freakin' petty then, the press had to go to a lot of trouble to create the lie that Gingrich was "pettier".....

I'll bet there are a few pinheads that are actually believe that too....

Yeah....all Clinton had to do was sign the bill passed by both houses of congress and there would not have been any shut down....
and he gets a pass on the blame....amazing how that works ain;t it ??

The shutdown and Gingrich's role in it were widely cited at the time as a contributing factor in President Clinton's reelection.

Do you think it will work the same way today, if the GOP forces the government to close next month?

I think that if the government shuts down the public will chose someone to blame, the same as then.....your assumption that said choice will be identical to the last is up for question.....I think the general public wants spending curbed by a HUGE majority......this could be solved quite simply.....I believe we still have $100billion+ unspent from the unstimulating stimulus bill....I believe we also have $50billion+ unspent TARP money.....cancel them both and we have far more than a token cut for the current year......

a blanket refusal to cut SOMETHING from the current year spending, coupled with the fact the Dems failed to even produce a budget for the current year will, I suspect, result in blame falling on their heads this time.....

A shutdown is for non-essential services only. When we have such a high deficit, why do we have non-essential services at all?

The difference is that I don't consider conservatives "the enemy".
I was referring to the relationship that you brought up earlier: Gingrich and the press. Do you deny that the press was his enemy? Do you think that he was serious when he gave Clinton's snub as a reason?
