#IRS admits #TeaParty and conservative groups were targeted during #Obama Admin.

he Trump administration, after years of litigation, has settled lawsuits with Tea Party and other conservative groups who say they were unfairly targeted by the IRS under the Obama administration.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced early Thursday that the Justice Department had entered into settlements with Tea Party groups whose tax-exempt status was significantly delayed by the IRS dating back to 2013, “based solely on their viewpoint or ideology.”

The settlements involve payments to the plaintiffs and an apology from the IRS.

The targeting scandal drew heavy attention in 2013 when the IRS admitted it applied extra scrutiny to conservative groups applying for nonprofit status. Lois Lerner, then head of the Exempt Organizations unit responsible, became the public face of the scandal, though other IRS officials were involved as well.

Sessions said that groups with names involving “Tea Party” or “Patriots,” or those with specific policy positions concerning government spending, were subject to “inappropriate criteria” to “screen” applications.

The IRS admits that its treatment of Plaintiffs during the tax-exempt determination process, including screening their applications based on their names or policy positions, subjecting those applications to heightened scrutiny and inordinate delays, and demanding some Plaintiffs’ information that TIGTA determined was unnecessary to the agency’s determination of their tax-exempt status, was wrong,” the IRS said in court documents. “For such treatment, the IRS expresses its sincere apology.”

The Justice Department’s settlement would pay the claims of each of the over 400 groups in the case. The attorneys for the groups said it was “a great day for the First Amendment,” but noted that day “was too long in coming.”

However, like Lois Lerner’s stated apology back in 2013, any recent so-called 'apology' by the IRS has little value. That is because the Service continues to suggest that its targeting was really just ‘mismanagement.’”

Funny how a conservative can take a framed narrative by Fox and then misinterpret it even further on their own

You got the whole thing portrayed as a deliberate plot using using Sessions decision to settle cases as an indication of such, but the group pushing the case itself doesn't seem to think the IRS admits it, "the Service continues to suggest that its targeting was really just mismanagement."

So how I'm the hell does this amount to "the IRS admits Tea Party was targeted?"

good lord. The IRS settled and issued an apology?
The freaking IRS would never apologize and settle unless they were guilty of 1st Amendment violation.

It's using the dodge of "mismanagement" as reasoning it's not evil and corrupt .
But it's not denying guilt

DEMOCRAT denial and deflection. Look! Over there! Exxon is being investigated! Look! Over that way! Old man Bush is accused of grabbing pussy! Look! Behind you! Trump's tax cuts may cause deficits!

:rofl2:

This has already been debunked repeatedly. The IRS looked for and targeted political names as a methodology for determining which groups were abusing and posing as non-profit entities, in the wake of Citizens United. I applaud them for doing so.

Fake scandal is fake. This has already been determined. You'll notice that only conservative media outlets are whining about this, even though liberal groups were targeted as well.

If you think this scandal is real, the follow up question is, should political advocacy groups been allowed to pose as non-profit entities?

Political Campaign Activities - Risks to Tax-Exempt Status. In return for its favored tax-status, a charitable nonprofit promises the federal government that it will not engage in “political campaign activity” and if it does, IRS regulations mandate that the charitable nonprofit will lose its tax-exempt status.

I don't know or care about what goes into a settlement, under a Trump DOJ.

And that you refuse to answer my follow-up question is proof that you don't know what you're talking about.

My apathy to entertain your question is not proof of anything...

You mean like Planned Parenthood? Sierra Club?

I agree end all non profit designations. That solves the problem. Do you join me in calling for this? Or do you want to have your fav left wing causes remain "non profit"?

The reason conservative/tea party groups were disproportionately targeted is because they were disproportionately engaging in BRAZEN tax-exempt political shenanigans. The Trump DOJ 'settled' because it was an easy to way to take a shot at the previous administration, which itself actually wasn't involved in the IRS targeting. The IRS itself decided to target these glaring and brazen political organizations. It was an easy and effective way to scrutinize groups trying to cheat the tax system.

By like a partisan lemming, you have decided to lambast Obama and the IRS, not the people actually engaged in cheating.

Your ironic post is ironic.
