No one has posted an article on the shooting at Camp Victory

A very tragic event and my heart goes out to the families of every soldier involved in this.

It is so heart breaking, but this too is a very sad fact of war...

This is war folks, the very ugly and real face of war. This is what we ask of these young people while we sit on our fat asses at home.

My nephew has just returned to Kuwait and I am mindful of him daily!

You're right, froggie. This was so tragic, and so little was released to the media about the shootings that the story didn't go very far, and neither did it slake the general public's apparent thirst for all the gory details.

We who have never faced war personally have no comprehension of what these people deal with, and we generally fail to consider the emotional trauma they live with daily. Whether it is dealing with the deaths of their fellows or the constant fear that the next step or ride they take may be their last, the stress is unimaginable.

Each time a loved one of someone I know is assigned over there I just hold my breath for them.

Still ironing out the wrinkles on the spin....
Its Bush's fault
Its Cheney's fault
Its Rumfelds fault
Its Limbaugh's fault

Now all this is gonna take a few hours, so just be patient....Obermann, Chris Matthews, Pelosi and Harry Reid are working on it as we speak....
As soon as its teleprompter ready, Obama will hold a news conference....his 125th during his first 104 days...

Well, dear, whose idea was it to invade Iraq? It wasn't Clintons or even Bush 41, they knew the consequences. They handled the terrorists in other ways, didn't they! Smarter, better...less costly in lives.

I think you about covered all the idiots who thought it was a good idea though, thanks!

I didn't lay blame, you turned it into the blame game.

It is everyone's fault who did not stand up and say it was wrong! Congress, Bush, and all his idiots.

I blame Young, Murkowski and Stevens, too.

I would say they have to live with the blood on their hands, but I don't think they have consciences or see it as being their sin, also.

They have not imprisoned these people, either, so they are all guilty and everyone who voted for GWB the second time, you all bear responsibility for the deaths of these young Americans.

I hope you sleep well at night. I couldn't if I were them, but like I said, they have no conscience.

What a terrible event. The stress just becomes too much for some people to handle. I've been hearing on the radio how the Army suicide rate is the greatest in decades, and that the rate is now higher than for the general population. Those stupid bush chickenhawks really did a number on our young people, with the repeat deployments to war zones. I don't know how they can live with themselves.

How many murders, suicides and accidental deaths occur in a population of the same age, sex and racial make-up as US soldiers, but didn't volunteer for the war? I'd like to see a comparison.

Suicide rate is not as high, this I know. I will go look for the rest.

At least 6,256 US veterans took their lives in 2005, at an average of 17 a day, according to figures broadcast last night. Former servicemen are more than twice as likely than the rest of the population to commit suicide.

Such statistics compare to the total of 3,863 American military deaths in Iraq since the invasion in 2003 - an average of 2.4 a day, according to the website ICasualties.org.

The rate of suicides among veterans prompted claims that the US was suffering from a “mental health epidemic” – often linked to post-traumatic stress.

The suicide rate among Americans as a whole was 8.9 per 100,000, but the level among veterans was at least 18.7. That figure rose to a minimum of 22.9 among veterans aged 20 to 24 – almost four times the nonveteran average for people of the same age.

There are 25 million veterans in the United States, 1.6 million of whom served in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Homicide trends in the USA

The New York Times found 121 cases in which veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan committed a killing in this country, or were charged with one, after their return from war.

From the October 1, 2001 start of the Afghanistan war, that's about 26,000 troops/month. To date (Jan 2008) that would give about 1.99 million.

http://www.windsofchange.net/archives/the_media_does_it_again.html

That means that the NY Times 121 murders represent about a 7.08/100,000 rate.

Now the numbers on deployed troops are probably high - fewer troops from 2001 - 2003; I'd love a better number if someone has it.

But for initial purposes, let's call the rate 10/100,000, about 40% higher than the calculated one.

Now, how does that compare with the population as a whole?

Turning to the DoJ statistics, we see that the US offender rate for homicide in the 18 - 24 yo range is 26.5/100,000.For 25 - 34, it's 13.5/100,000.

This is one guys math, I guess you mathmen can go from here!

There isn't much on comparison out there, but I know that my friend has returned to duty in Iraq and he is on anti-depressants and does well as long as he has a supply at hand.

Other than myself no-one has posted the above either. It is like Iraq has disappeared from the media radar. Neither the good nor the bad seems to be reported well any more.

Its not really even shocking anymore why so many people are so off in the way they look at the world and its events. 17 a day? You didnt even think this sounded wrong or off?

geeezzz. Almost twice as many suicides as war killed? and you posted it here. The stuff that people lap up to support their views... sometimes its just.. well... its mind boggling.

I understand there is a problem. But seriously if you care about any problem you should at least take the littlest amount of time possible to just be factual.

He wrote: there "are about 18 suicides per day among America's 25 million veterans."

I told you i just copied the numbers...I ran the one guys math and thought you might debate that. The claims aren't mine, they are CBS's.

The other claims weren't mine, I didn't pull the numbers out of the air. It was what was stated by CBS.

Someone just asked for the numbers and I supplied them.
