Iran to join the SCO, the world's biggest regional market

Iran hails signing a memorandum of commitments to join the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), thus entering a "new phase" of interaction with the body.

Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian announced signing the document in a tweet on Wednesday.

The top diplomat is accompanying Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi on a visit to the city of Samarkand in Uzbekistan, which is slated to host a summit of the SCO.

The SCO was founded by China, Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan in 2001, and currently forms the world's biggest regional market with eight official members, and three observer states.

I'm certain what the military implications of this are- as yet.

I wonder how much mutual security China offered its fellow SCO member India when it attacked India...

The SCO is basically meaningless at the moment. None of its members are willing to open its markets to the other members, and there is no real mutual security. China is offering more open markets to the USA under Biden then to any country in the SCO.

In fact, the real big new news is that the USA will have full auditing rights to any Chinese company listed in the USA.

The SCO is the world's largest regional organization, covering approximately 60% of the area of Eurasia, 40% of the world population, and more than 30% of global GDP

A brief scan reveals that the SCO was devised as opposition to NATO and ' liberal democracy '. Competition is always good, isn't it.

With luck- and good management- Iran's admittance will be swift- and that will help to short-circuit Israel's planned American war on Iran. The 'West ' are warmongers, unfortunately, difficult to accept but there you have it.

I doubt India for one wants to oppose NATO. They are losing a lot of their liberal democracy, which sucks.

There are four nuclear nations in SCO, with many of their nuclear weapons pointed at other countries in the SCO. They are hardly a consistent military alliance.
