Thank you, moon, for remembering the brave occupants of the USS Liberty. The Israelis did not mis-identify the US Navy technical research ship. They slaughtered 34 American servicemen and civilians, and wounded 171. When their planes failed to sink the vessel, they then sent torpedo boats to finish the job. During the air attack, one pilot recognized the Liberty as American immediately, so informed his headquarters, and was told to ignore the American flag and continue his attack. He refused to do so and returned to base, where he was arrested.
Whether the research vessel was a 'spy ship', or not, obviously, during the six day war, General Moshe Dayan didn't want their communications intercepted, and he ordered his air force, and then his navy, to sink the ship with 294 Americans aboard. They failed. The Liberty survived. LBJ might not have been complicit, as some suggest, but at the very least, he was willing to accept $6 million in Israel compensation for the "misidentification", even though the USS Liberty did not even resemble a rusted out old horse transport vessel.
On June 8, 1967, 49 years ago to this day, Israel bombed, torpedoed, napalmed and even machine gunned the life boats of the USS Liberty. They did not want survivors. Yet, miraculously, the ship did survive, and here we are today, supplying Israel with by far the most foreign aid of any nation on this planet.
I guess the Muslim haters in this country out-number the patriots that were sacrificed on June 8, 1967. Any attack on our countrymen should be defended. By either Al Qaeda, ISIS, or even our closest allies. A measly $6 million, and "sorry, we thought you were an Arab horse transporting vessel" doesn't make it right. To this day, Israel honors Motor Torpedo Boat 203, which fired the deadly torpedo at the USS Liberty. The ship's wheel and bell were placed on prominent display at the naval museum, among the maritime artifacts of which the Israeli navy was most proud. [By proud, I mean they were proud of killing innocent Americans. The USS Liberty was neutral in the six day war. We were sympathetic to the new nation of Israel.
But after bombing, torpedoing, napalming and even machine gunning the life boats of the USS Liberty, maybe we are not so enthusiastic.
