Initial Police Report on Tyre Nichols Arrest Is Contradicted by Videos

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A police report written hours after officers beat Tyre Nichols was starkly at odds with what videos have since revealed, making no mention of the powerful kicks and punches unleashed on Nichols and instead claiming that he was violent.

The police report painted Nichols, 29, who died three days after the Jan. 7 beating, as an irate suspect who had “started to fight” with Memphis police officers, even reaching for one of their guns. The videos, which were released last week, showed nothing of the sort.

Instead, they captured police officers yanking Nichols from a car, threatening to hurt him and then — after he ran away — catching up with him and inflicting the deadly beating. All the while, it appears from the videos, Nichols never struck back.

“Tuesday, a state House committee approved a ban on residency requirements for police officers and firefighters.
On Feb. 26, the department is organizing several job fairs and classes in an effort to recruit 300 new police officers and streamline processes by removing barriers. As soon as a prospect passes a background check, he or she will be hired immediately, said Assistant Chief Shawn Jones. The current process requires prospects to wait until a training class opens before getting a job offer, with waits of up to six months.
“When that individual comes to the job fair, have them ready to test and have them also ready to do a physical awareness test. We don’t call it physical agility anymore because that has a tendency to eliminate applicants that we otherwise could get through our process in a six month period,” said Davis.
“Most of the changes that we made are to help applicants to be more aware of the process they’re about to go into,” she added.
The department is also hiring retired officers and out of state applicants, who will be required to move to Memphis.
Through a partnership with Deloitte 360 Recruiting, MPD officials will also be able to send targeted communication to anyone interested in becoming a police officer.
“We already know there’s an interest so we’re gonna to pull in as many of them as we can to get to that 300 number,” said Jones.”

They had to come up with some bullshit to justify their evil. Still no evidence that Nichols was doing anything wrong. It was like they were murdering him for sport or to asswage some kind of frustration. No human or any other creature deserves to be tortured like that.

No. There are plenty of good cops. I've met many of them. If you're a piece of shit just don't be a cop. Period.

Yes their are lot's of good cops but those kind of people are getting harder to hire. Police are now hiring people that they would not have previously hired just to fill a portion of their empty positions.

The Chicago Police Department (CPD) recently waived its college credit requirements for potential recruits with either two years of military or peace officer experience, or three years in corrections, social services, health care, trades, or education. Under the old rules, these candidates would need at least 60 hours of college credit.

The changes, confirmed by CPD Superintendent David Brown last week, are meant to help the department make up staffing shortfalls in light of COVID-19 and other national conversations driving people away from the policing profession. During the four-month period that recruitment was active in Chicago last year, around 3,800 candidates applied, compared to the roughly 22,000 that did in previous years, according to CNN.

Prior to the city's changes, Philadelphia similarly removed some college credit requirements for police recruits in 2016. New Orleans also dropped its 60 hours of college credits requirement and now requires only a high school diploma or GED. Both cities made the changes in response to ongoing staffing issues.

At least two out of of five Memphis police officers charged with murder in the fatal beatdown of Tyre Nichols joined the force after the department relaxed its hiring requirements.

Tadarrius Bean and Demetrius Haley both joined the Memphis Police Department in Aug. 2020, NBC News reported, more than two years after the department dramatically loosened the education qualifications to become an officer.

As of Jan. 2022, MPD was down roughly 500 officers, the news outlet reported, citing the Memphis Police Association.

Agree to disagree. The world is not running out of good candidates.

Lol, do you have proof that they are lowering standards? Memphis just did away with the requirement that police have to live in Memphis. Their standards are still the same.

America needs to re-evaluate what we value. We ostensibly value education and public safety, but we don't pay them appropriate to the task we set before them.

And police training needs to move away from this "warrior" type training and this move to over militarize the cops.

This is why the "Defund the Police" movement (the real one, not the cartoon most conservatives think) is actually a good idea. We need to put our funding of police to include mental health advocates and other social services folks instead of assuming that the guys we put on the street with guns are going to be able to be a psychologist as well.

Defund the Police is NOT removing money from police departments. It's actually using the money to hire people who are suited to the tasks that occur that often lead to bad outcomes when no professional mental health care worker was around.

WOuldn't change much in the Tyre case but it does point up to a need to improve police training and efforts at DE-ESCALATION. Even if Nichols led them on a high-speed chase we should expect from our cops a degree of professionalism so that they don't turn what is clearly a case of cops getting pissed off and beating the shit out of a guy. Tyre isn't completely without critique here but it's nothing compared to the extremes presented by cops who were CLEARLY amped up and unable to control their own aggression.

The perfect cop would be one that is well paid, highly trained and self-confident enough to know that he holds all the cards and doesn't have to beat a traffic stop into a bloody pulp who later dies.

I think a law enforcement officer in this country should have two years of college and there should be national standards for law enforcement training too?!! The thought of a high school educated thug or Barney Fife cop with a badge and a gun with the power of life or death over you is some scary shit?!! Granted there are good officers too?!! 40% of all law enforcement officers in this country should be in this line of work, in my opinion?!!

Also that qualified immunity needs to be taken away from law enforcement officers too, a bad officer and his department should be held accountable for their actions?!!

Yes. That was really terrible of those Black cops wasnt it? Its obvious that Black cops have to be trained better to deal with minority people.

All kidding aside,...I am known in my area as a very nice guy believe it or not. NO WAY could I ever be a cop nowadays and deal with what they have to deal with. I'd have people walking around with busted eyes everywhere from the clubbings I gave them...

If you allow cops to be trained by Israeli fascists then you will have fascist cops.

U.S. Police are Being Trained by Israel—And Communities of Color Are Paying the Price

In recent years, Georgia has experienced troubling trends in fatal police shootings. As this has unfolded, the state continues to pursue a “police exchange” program with the state of Israel.

Groan away at his post you fools but this is exactly what you get when you defund the police. Fewer candidates, and less training = the alt lefties wet dream.

I wouldn't want to be a cop either. It's not in my skill set. I'm a sales person.

I am honest to a fault. If you're not transparent, people know. I'm making cold calls right now. Got a couple of prospects! It's a numbers game.
