On March 29, Indiana Representative Eric Turner (R) introduced HB 1210, a bill that would make all abortions illegal after 20 weeks. Dismayed, Rep. Gail Riecken (D) offered an amendment that would exempt “women who became pregnant due to rape or incest for whom pregnancy threatens their life or could cause serious and irreversible physical harm” from being forced to carry to term. That’s when Rep. Turner claimed that women would use Riecken’s proposed amendment as a “giant loophole.”

You really have to see it to believe it—watch the video of Turner’s outrageous statement and Rep. Linda Lawson’s (D) incredibly emotionally charged rebuttal:

Since Riecken’s rape/incest amendment was voted down, Turner’s original bill is now up for a final vote in the Indiana House. Then it will move to the Senate—where legislation like this has passed before.

Since the landmark Supreme Court decision, Norma McCorvey gave birth to her child, and Sandra Bensing never had an abortion. Both of these women have also come forward to admit that their testimony was false. In 1987, McCorvey told Washington Times columnist Carl Rowan that the Roe decision was based on false testimony. She admitted that her account of being raped in 1969 was a fabrication designed to invalidate the law. Instead, she confessed that she had become pregnant by her boyfriend.

Sandra Bensing also filed a request in early January of this year asking the Georgia Supreme Court to review her case. She told the Atlanta-Journal Constitution that she approached an attorney seeking assistance to secure legal custody of her children. The attorney told her that she would like her to be the plaintiff in a case challenging the Georgia state law banning abortion, and she agreed.

We can rest assured this is merely a view of the extreme fringe - it is not the view of most Americans, or even most on the right, for that matter. I am conservative and pro-life in principle, but as far as the law is concerned, I am pro-choice. Abortion should be safe, legal, and rare.

I agree that Roe v. Wade has no legal basis whatsoever, Constitutional or otherwise. It is a flawed ruling that ought to be overturned, at which point the issue would be decided upon by the States.

An antiquated ruling based on limited science; bad constitutional application; and false testimony. I read what you wrote in the other post; It is no stretch to imagine false cries of rape in order to obtain an abortion....as Roe itself demonstrates.

As to medical abortions being a states issue? That is what it was prior to Roe.

In my mind, there is nothing we can do to prevent that from happening, aside from banning abortion in all cases, which would be draconian. For instance, would you feel comfortable with the government preventing a 12-year-old girl who was raped from getting an abortion? Abortion is never a good thing - it usually causes significant guilt, depression, etc. for the girl/woman - but even so, it is not my decision to make.

Interestingly, the plaintiff in Roe is now a pro-life Christian (and undoubtedly hated by the far left as a result...)

there's your solution then.....if the rape wasn't reported when it happened, then it isn't grounds for abortion six weeks later....that will ensure reporting........the lives of innocent children saved, more rapists taken off the streets....it's a win-win situation......

I don't see the point of anti-abortionists getting all excited about science. I mean, does it really matter if ancient people believed the sperm grew into a baby or they weren't aware of the fertilization process in regards to abortion? They were aware a process was taking place which would result in a child being born at some later date. How does being aware of the process change anything?

I do agree if abortion laws are tightened there will be a jump in rape accusations.

That's exactly the problem I have with anti-abortionist's rhetoric "fetuses are human beings", "life is sacred", etc. What degree of suffering by one individual is equivalent to or justifiable regarding the killing of another innocent individual?

Whether it's a 12 year old girl or the mother's health what value do we put on the life of a human being?

In my view, while such circumstances may make up only a tiny fraction of abortions that doesn't change the fact that designating a fetus as a human being and then allowing it's destruction for anything less than a life/death situation cheapens the value of all human beings.

I think it's a wonderful solution.....any man willing to knock up a woman ought to be willing to do 10-15 years in order for her to kill it without repercussions......

prosecutors could even set up a "my girfriend wants an abortion" plea bargain package.....say maybe "out in two, with five years probation, no sex offender registration for first time offenders".......

He pointed out that, with so many rapes unreported, there is a good chance of having babies aborted with the claim of a rape when no rape was reported.

We have seen documented evidence of false reports of rape in order to obtain an abortion in famous cases.
