Independent Russian News Media Silenced

Putin regime cracks down on independent media in Russia

"For 32 years, Ekho Moskvy has been the go-to radio stations for millions of Russians, a must-do media for the world's biggest newsmakers.

Ekho Moskvy isn't the only one. This week, federal prosecutors demanded access be restricted to Russia's best known independent TV channel, TV Rain. The decision came just as the station was preparing to screen a documentary about their own turbulent history.

Instead, TV Rain signed off with a bang, broadcasting "Swan Lake," a joke Russian viewers will get. That's what state TV aired here in 1991 during the coup, an event that heralded the end of the Soviet Union. "

Totally fascist. There can be no claim that anyone is free in Russia. Freedom of the press is gone. Freedom of speech is gone. Freedom of assembly is gone. Freedom is gone.

Dissent is not allowed. There is a 15 year sentence for speaking any view contrary to the Kremlin:

"Russians are also now just passing today a 15-year sentence for anyone who intentionally spreads what they say is fake news about the military."

As Russia assaults Ukraine, the government tightens its grip on information about the war

Sounds like what most of our media has been doing since March 2020, bar the imprisonment, but Trudeau has that covered.

When there is no freedom of the press, there can be no freedom.

I heard about Echo Moscow and TV Rain last week from Russian acquaintances.

Something is going on with Facebook in Russia too. Until a couple days ago, Russian Facebook users were sharing sustained and blistering criticisms of Putin and the war. But content is being removed and the sharing of anti war posts has been severely curtailed.

What's the penalty for treason in bowler-hat land, maggot ? The 'west ' banned Russian media a week ago. Mendacious chickenshits.

Fun fact: Parliament just enacted legislation that criminalizes protests. That would be the "democratic one" in Westminster.

Some of these berks turned out to march for Ukraine a couple of days ago.

And don't get me started on the Canadian hypocrisy.

Western politicians have been busy expressing their admiration for Russians risking arrest to take part in anti-war marches – but that didn’t stop them voting to restrict the right to protest in their own countries.

Hello Cypress,

It would be rather brave to document making anti-government statements after the government just imposed a 15 year sentence for doing so.

Hello Cypress,

It would be rather brave to document making anti-government statements after the government just imposed a 15 year sentence for doing so.

I think 15 years is the maximum sentence for what the government considers the most egregious cases.

A friend of mine from Moscow says that the cannon fodder, the garden variety protestors generally get levied fines, and his organization and the Navalny people are soliciting funds to be held in trust to pay people's fines.

Hello moon,

That's what they say about ours. Answer ? Read 'em both.

Our government does not operate a news service, nor does it prohibit any other views besides our position.

This is not a situation of two sides of equal moral stature. This is an instance of a larger aggressor country attacking a smaller independent nation in a completely unprovoked manner. It is clear which side is wrong.

Russia does not deserve to have it's government propaganda placed on equal relevance to the free world news.

That's cool. Russians must be fairly well oppressed to risk coming out into the street to protest in violation of a Putin government crack-down.
