Because that alone won't solve it (and brings up other issues/unintended consequences). Realistically it will take some level of tax increase, increasing of the retirement age and possibly even reducing benefit levels.

That brings pain to all partisans/ideologues which is why politicians (who are all hedged in by their donors to use your term) won't say it or propose it.

I certainly would. It is a backup income for everyone, and it is important that it be universal. If it just becomes for some people, then those with more will be able to cut it. No one things they will lose their $1 million in interest and dividends a year, but plenty do.

I say raise the cap on taxes, so those making more money would have to pay more into the system.

Besides, Biden has a total non-real estate net worth of about $3 to $4 million. Assuming he keeps his houses, which he probably will, he can expect to live off less than $160k, not the $1 million you claim. That is not enough to keep up his houses, he is going to have to earn more money after he leaves office.

Will trump even get Social Security? he would need 10 years of earned income, and I have seen no evidence of any earned income.

then we could cut the $1M to $160k to save even more......how about we cut benefits to the highest 50% and double benefits for the lower 50%........and obviously if someone loses his $1M annual income wouldn't they automatically qualify for the SS benefits?.......

Will it save money? Serious question. You would have to track down everyone's earnings, which costs money. In fact, it costs about the same amount of money.

And what are the results: if someone suddenly looses their money, it will take months to get Social Security. That is months they have to live on nothing. It also makes an incentive for some people to cut Social Security to zero.

Nothing in life is "automatic." You would have to apply, and the government would have to investigate.
