imagine government being able to open your own private safe

That could be easily avoided by statute.

If the safe were opened inappropriately,
the statue could mandate than any incriminating evidence was inadmissible in court
and the contents had to be returned.

Any first year Harvard law student could write that law as absolute boilerplate.

All we need are simple laws to avoid such nonsense,

but we have a totally inefficient and dysfunctional government

as created by our "magnificently perfect" Constitution.

The story says the FBI had a warrant to search the safe. Getting the codes from Liberty only means they didn't have to use destructive methods to get into the safe.

True.
However it could be argued that the warrant being even obtainable
suggests that inadequate privacy laws are in place.

Liberty probably needs to have the codes to help actual safe owners who forget or lose the combinations
but should they be giving them to the FBI for any reason?

That's the issue probably not agreed upon.

so far i'm not too surprised that the big government leftists don't give a shit that a private corporation was more loyal to the government than it's customers.

Liberty only gave the code when the FBI presented them with a copy of the warrant.
The warrant was issued as part of the investigation of a crime.

I understand. The real issue isn't safes. The real issue is whether or not it's too easy to get warrants.

I tend to think that is is, but I haven't done the work to offer an argument for that position.
My gut is that since the RICO and Patriot Acts, we may really have become a police state.

I'm a big government guy, true enough,
but I'd rather see the big government in the social safety net,
not necessary in the FBI.

Then go retro...
