Tom Hayden: The Afghanistan Escalation Is Just The Last In A Series Of Disappointments

Obama's escalation in Afghanistan is the last in a string of disappointments. His flip-flopping acceptance of the military coup in Honduras has squandered the trust of Latin America. His Wall Street bailout leaves the poor, the unemployed, minorities, and college students on their own. And now comes the Afghanistan-Pakistan decision to escalate the stalemate, which risks his domestic agenda, his Democratic base, and possibly even his presidency.

The expediency of his decision was transparent. Satisfy the generals by sending 30,000 more troops. Satisfy the public and peace movement with a timeline for beginning withdrawals of those same troops, with no timeline for completing a withdrawal.

Obama's timeline for the proposed Afghan military surge mirrors exactly the 18-month Petraeus timeline for the surge in Iraq.

We'll see. To be clear: I'll support Obama down the road against Sarah Palin, Lou Dobbs or any of the pitchfork carriers for the pre-Obama era. But no bumper sticker until the withdrawal strategy is fully carried out.

But for now, the fight is on.

I love watching the libtards self destruct with all the infighting. You know its bad when you piss of a big liberal like Tom Hayden

Self destruct?

It's called democracy & diversity of opinion. The GOP should give it a try sometime, instead of the usual "march in lockstep" thing...

You got democrats threatening to march on DC, due to their own failed policies.

And now little Tommy is peeling off his "I :kiss2: Obama" sticker off his car. Yep, I would call it self-destruct. They will be swept out of office like yesterday's trash.

Nah - you guys are funny. Tom Hayden taking a sticker off of his car is not a party "imploding."

It's either "Dems were outraged when Bush did this & now they're silent!", or - when someone actually disagrees - "they're imploding!"

Life is tough in the minority. It's like a constant spin cycle...

Tom Hayden is an idiot. Had he paid any attention during the campaign, it was abundantly clear that Obama had about zero intention of ending the Afghanistan war and that, inf fact, Obama intended to send more troops there if elected:

KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Sen. Barack Obama said Sunday that United States needs to focus on Afghanistan in its battle against terrorism.
Sen. Barack Obama and Afghan President Hamid Karzai meet Sunday in Kabul.

"The Afghan government needs to do more. But we have to understand that the situation is precarious and urgent here in Afghanistan. And I believe this has to be our central focus, the central front, on our battle against terrorism," Obama said Sunday on CBS' "Face the Nation."

"I think one of the biggest mistakes we've made strategically after 9/11 was to fail to finish the job here, focus our attention here. We got distracted by Iraq," he said.

Obama said troop levels must increase in Afghanistan.

"For at least a year now, I have called for two additional brigades, perhaps three," he told CBS. "I think it's very important that we unify command more effectively to coordinate our military activities. But military alone is not going to be enough."

[snip]

Obama has made Afghanistan a key focus of his foreign policy, saying he would make it the central front in the "war on terror" if elected.

That was July 2008.

Of course it is. Haven't you heard the truism? "As Tom Hayden does, so goes the Democrat Party!"

I mean, it's so constantly said that everybody knows it.

(BTW - Who is Tom Hayden?)

Yes Lorax, that is what it is called and the democratic party will survive this. And I think the republicans are going to see more and more diversity of opinion withinin their party....the party of the Sarah Palin's and the Joe Scarborough's (I think that's his name...the dude on CNBC in the mornings). Will it split the party? Not any more than the democrats are split, I think. This is something I don't think many republicans are ready for, especially those who just began paying attention to politics during the Bush years.

Dude, two or three brigade is about 7000-10,000 troops. Your Messiah just committed 30,000. Its also only about 1/2 of what his commanders recommended.
