Google presidential elections...and you will see that the South voted for Democrats almost exclusively (except for Strom Thurmond) from the end of the Civil War...right up until 1964...when LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act.
Fact is, the Democratic Party dominated the South until 1964. But then the act was passed...and the racists abandoned ship for the Republican Party...and has held that until now.
It does seem the South is waking up...and I would not be surprised to see a steady shift toward the Democrats.
