Conservatives are better at marketing & messaging. They took "woke" and made it a dirty word. They redefined it.

At it's core, its reference is being more well-informed, more aware and more conscious about political & social issues. Democrats need to push back on the "anti-woke" zeal sweeping through the right-wingers and re-claim the message.

So, Florida is where "woke goes to die?" That means you're ignorant there? You're asleep?
 
Woke just means you have become aware of how some groups in America are being mistreated on social and institutional levels.

Maybe under the original definition of woke that would be the case, but language is ever changing. Woke as a term means something different to conservatives, described pretty well by urban dictionary. It absolutely requires a strong push back.

the original meaning is slowly fading and instead, is used more often to term someone as hypocritical and think they are the 'enlightened' despite the fact that they are extremely close-minded and are unable to accept other people's criticism or different perspective. Especially considering the existence of echo chamber (media) that helped them to find other like-minded individuals, thus, further solidifying their 'progressive' opinion.

There’s still an element of abstractness when it comes to defining woke actions in the real world. It’s one thing for people to simply declare themselves woke (based on a dictionary definition) and say it’s a good thing and we should all be woke. But that can be very separate from what people do in the real world.

There is no doubt that some on the left have taken it to obnoxious, holier-than-thou extremes.

But its core meaning is aspirational. It's kind of sad to see what a negative word it has become in general. Because, really - its counterpart is asleep.
