In January 2009, Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, asked his constituents “What Could You do with Your Savings From a Two Month Tax Holiday?”


He noted that he had proposed a two month federal tax holiday, “temporarily suspending individual income and FICA taxes for 2 months – meaning no taxes would be paid on those two months’ income. This way, instead of someone in Washington giving away your money to mismanaged companies, you would be able to keep those hard-earned dollars in your paycheck and use them to invest or buy from those you believe are providing the best services or products.”


In this effort, Gohmert was joined by 56 of his colleagues, including presidential candidate Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., who decries the payroll tax holiday on the campaign trail; and Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, the chair of the Republican Conference...

Republicans cared so deeply for tax cuts targetting the 1% that they threatened to hold up funding to keep our Government operating.

Republicans care so little for the rest of us, they refuse to pass an extension of the payroll tax cut unless they are allowed to attach an amendment giving more money to their friends in Big Oil.

They care more about an oil pipeline than they do the Middle Class.

The fact remains there needs to be more environmental studies done...this pipeline legislation was, to borrow an oft regurgitated Republican comeback, "rammed down our throats" so DC politicians could claim they had created some jobs.

Because you can't defend the enormous slap in the face the GOP just gave working Americans?

By rejecting the Senate plan to extend payroll tax relief for 160 million Americans and unemployment benefits for 2.2 million people for at least two months, House Speaker John A. Boehner and his Republican colleagues confirm the Democrats' argument that the Republican party is on the payroll of the nation's wealthiest elite.

Republicans had already rejected any proposal that would extend the relief and benefits for a year because Democrats proposed funding it by increasing taxes on the wealthiest Americans.

Boehner claims he's holding out for a long term deal as well. He insists on including the oil-pipeline-from Canada in the agreement because it would create thousands of jobs. These kind of projects --oil pipelines-- don't work like instant coffee. It would take several months before any new workers are hired.

There is really no compelling reason to deny millions of Americans benefits that they now enjoy --tax relief and unemployment benefits. These benefits should not be held hostage to the oil pipeline deal.

The pipeline deal will eventually be worked out after all the environmental impact reviews are completed.

Parting way with Republican leaders, Americans by an almost 70 percent margin support the idea that the rich should pay a little more to fund social programs and spark economic recovery. Many very wealthy people, including the billionaire Warren Buffet has endorsed this concept.

Yet Boehner and the Republican party are determined to do anything that they believe will create hurdles to Barack Obama's re-relection bid even if it means more poverty and suffering for ordinary American households.

The Republican leadership must be disappointed that the economy has been improving lately.

Unemployment statistics, rather than climbing towards 10%, dramatically plunged to 8.5% So, ironically, while many Americans celebrate the creation of tens of thousands of new jobs, Republican leaders mourn, since such good news diminishes their prospects to reclaim The White House.

Some Republicans however aren't as reckless as Boehner. Republican Senator Scott Brown has called the Boehner maneuver "wrong" and distanced himself from the ploy. Brown knows that Republicans will lose big next year if they can be tagged as a party willing to destroy this country in order to defeat President Obama.

Honest answer, I'm not following this payroll tax cut debate. Everything is about politics nothing is about principle so I choose not to follow. I'm focused on finding a job, my fantasy football team made the Super Bowl and my College Bowl Picks. I really do not care what each party accuses each other of. I'm sick of them both.

I've briefly read about the pipeline. I know you are from Texas and that's why I asked.
