I agree. Go back to using TEL. It's a much more effective moderator, and it helps lubricate the engine. It is also not hygroscopic, like ethanol is, meaning less rust in engine, fuel system, and induction components. It also doesn't attack cork gaskets, like ethanol does.

There's only one problem. TEL poisons catalytic converters, and too many places think those things actually help or something.
Worse, Cars today are all FADAC design. Their computers are programmed to account for the back pressure from the catalytic converter. The computer will have to be reprogrammed to handle the additional air flow through the engine if the catalytic converter is removed.

An O2 sensor is still useful as a fuel trim device though.

We don't need tetraethyllead in gasoline either. Back when it was used, it served two primary purposes:

1. It was an octane booster. This got around the slop tolerances in engines to give higher performance. It's not necessary today with modern high-tolerance engines.

2. It was a lubricant for softer materials in the engine like valve seats and stems. It reduced wear on the engine. With modern materials, this is no longer an issue. Modern vehicle engines will easily go 250,000 miles if properly maintained.

Ethanol is added to gasoline as a pollution control measure. It is supposed to reduce pollution output of the engine. It really doesn't do that. It also raises the price of gasoline as it's more expensive to produce than just using straight gasoline. It is also less energy efficient and it's hydroscopic.

Bigger issues are slicing and dicing the Constitution, violation of civil and constitutional rights, vindictive and corrupt prosecutions, militarizing law enforcement, sending the military into cities against their will, pardoning insurrectionists, asking our own citizens to spy on each other, detention camps for misdemeanors. It still is, however, most FADAC engines have a contact microphone mounted on the engine case. It is used to listen for detonation. The computer backs off settings until detonation clears. The results is lower efficiency, but at least the damage from unmoderated fuel is minimized.

TEL was held up as the protector of valve seats and high-compression engines.

It lubricates the entire engine, assisting the oil in it's job. It works in all engines, doing the same job. Yes, that includes valve stems (particularly the exhaust valve).

Using unmoderated fuel in a car simply results in poor fuel efficiency for those FADAC systems equipped with this sensor and using it.
For those engines without this sensor, detonation can be a real problem, since it can easily destroy pistons, spark plugs, and valves.

Both ethanol and TEL are toxic compounds. So is gasoline.
