Identity politics: DNC race gets nasty
EDITORIAL
The toxic identity politics that define the current Democratic Party are at play in the race to decide the next chairman of the Democratic National Committee.
Interim Chairman Donna Brazile last week tossed Vincent Tolliver from the race after Tolliver suggested that Rep. Keith Ellison's Muslim faith was a reason for DNC members to reject him.
"Muslims discriminate against gays. Islamic law is clear on the subject, and being gay is a direct violation of it. In some Muslim countries, being gay is a crime punishable by death," Tolliver wrote in an email to The Hill.
Brazile determined that the statement violated a pledge all the DNC candidates signed to participate in the election process "in good faith."
Tolliver is now complaining that his First Amendment rights have been violated. Welcome to the Democratic Party, Vinny!
Ellison and Labor Secretary Tom Perez are the favorites to take over the DNC. New Hampshire Democratic Party Chairman Ray Buckley is one of 10 candidates still running. We remain agnostic on how the major political parties should organize themselves.
The rift exposes a blind spot in the Left's culture of tolerance. The treatment of gays, not to mention women and religious minorities, in the Islamic world never seems to register, as it pits competing Democratic interest groups against one another.
Democrats would much rather accuse Republicans of homophobia and Islamophobia than confront the contradictions within their coalition.
Does Brazile's support for religious freedom also apply to Christians? Does she have any plans to kick Executive Councilor Andru Volinsky out of the party after he badgered Frank Edelblut about his faith on Tuesday?
