I doubt that this story is even reported in the US

India has been pursuing the Dow Chemical company, owner of Union Carbide, for over two decades to get decent compensation for the 10,000+ deaths caused by the release of methyl isocyanate at Bhopal in December 1984. Considering all the sanctimonious crap that emanated from the Gulf oil spill last year and the exemplary way that BP addressed the issue of compensation, it is hardly surprising that rank hypocrisy and double standards apply when US corporations pollute overseas. We are talking about a disaster that has claimed thousands of lives, at least three times more than 9/11, and caused up to half a million injuries and yet Dow has got off with paying £300 million, a fucking insult considering the amounts paid out for the loss of a few shrimps in the Gulf. This is one of the most shameful episodes in US corporate history and the worst industrial accident in history, yet it has been buried in the sand by the US media and politicians.

I realize the loss of life in the Bhopal incident makes it outstanding, but be aware that Exxon, fined 5 billion in the Prince William Sound spill, had the fine reduced to $500 million (10%) yet still hasn't paid.

Yes, American Corporation get away with (literaly) murder.

Look at Monsanto for another example of a corporate monster.

Why are all of your stories wrong?

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — The IOC defended Dow Chemical's Olympic sponsorship Friday and denied that India was considering boycotting next year's London Games over the company's links to the world's worst industrial disaster.

Dow's sponsorship of the London Olympics has come under scrutiny in Britain and India because of the American-based company's connection with the Bhopal gas leak in 1984. Critics are calling for organizers to scrap Dow's sponsorship of a curtain-style wrap that will encircle the Olympic Stadium.

An estimated 15,000 people died and tens of thousands were maimed when poisonous gas leaked from the Union Carbide factory in Bhopal in central India. Dow bought Union Carbide in 2001 but denies responsibility for Carbide's Bhopal liabilities.

Some British media reported Friday that the Indian Olympic Association will vote on a possible boycott on Dec. 5. However, there was no confirmation of that in India, and the International Olympic Committee said the reports were inaccurate.

I'll see if any US media incorrectly reported that India was "considering" boycotting the Olympics... if it wasn't reported, it is more likely because the sourcing was speculative rather than concrete.

Why are you given to making such sweeping generalisations? This story was reported in several of the British and international media, not least the Daily Mail, the Telegraph, HuffPo and Daily India. If you had even bothered to notice, both your story and mine came from UK Yahoo News with a five hour difference. As to what happened in that time interval I don't know? The funniest thing about the story you've posted here is where it says that some media have reported it inaccurately studiously ignoring the fact that they reported it themselves five hours earlier. Maybe the Indian Olympic Association changed their mind or most likely they were leaned on heavily by the IOC behind the scenes? I will monitor further developments as they unfold.

It doesn't detract one iota from the disgusting display of US corporate arrogance on display here, coupled with the almost total apathy from the American public about the huge loss of life and the pathetic level of compensation for the victims. Talking about Dow, don't even get me started on Agent Orange which they produced in prodigious quantities during the Vietnam War. When I was in Saigon earlier this year I went to a war museum which had a section devoted to the effects of Agent Orange.

The silence is certainly deafening. Even the more enlightened poster seem to have been able to find something better to do than respond.
But then, what are a few dead brown people when they have a BLACK man to crucify and get out of their precious WHITE house?
It'll all be OK though cos there will be a picture on fox of someone giving a real Indian a 3 second hug.

What a bunch of merchant bankers!

Nearly five times the number of people that died on 9/11 were killed at Bhopal, yet Dow the bastards that supplied Agent Orange consider £300 million to be fair compensation for all those deaths. Just do the maths, Deepwater Horizon resulted in 11 dead and compensation of $20 billion whereas at Bhopal 15,000 died and hundreds of thousands were injured and Union Carbide/Dow literally got away with murder.

I haven't forgotten the sanctimonious clap trap that emanated from posters on here when BP was being roasted over Deepwater Horizon. Apart from Topspin, it seemed that the further an American lived from the Gulf the more bellicose the reaction. People on the West Coast, they know who they are, were as far as Britain from the Gulf and protected by the US landmass to boot but that didn't stop them moaning vociferously all the same.

How many British citizens were working on Deepwater Horizon?

Pay no attention to TopDoper, Tommy TuTu. He's barely middle-class by California standards, and definitely not one of the 1% despite his nattering about his alleged education.

Now, can you explain why an Englishman feels compelled to bash America on an American internet forum?

It is because you are so easy to bash. I doubt there is anywhere else on the planet where the average person lives up to their cartoon stereotype like America. Yes, I know it's cheap laughs but you are easily screwed without spending a dime (whatever a dime is).

Says the expatriate.
A dime is 1/10th of a dollar or back in the day, 1/4 ounce of herb.

I don't waste my time anymore playing mind games with the troll.
