Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban says there are countries which will not be able to substitute Russian gas with the more expensive American alternative.

Speaking to local radio station Kossuth on Friday, the Hungarian PM said Russian gas is his country’s only option, as Hungary is landlocked and won’t be able to receive liquified gas from the US.

Orban reiterated that Hungary condemns Russia’s attack against Ukraine, and that he understands the efforts of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, as his country is in trouble and he is looking out for Ukrainian interests, but stated that Hungary “can’t help the Ukrainian people by destroying itself.”

He added that it’s impossible for Hungary to “turn off cheap Russian gas and buy expensive American energy instead,” adding that it is not viable for Europe to count on the transportation of sufficient volumes of liquified gas from the US across the ocean, and that there is no alternative to Russian supplies in the near future, for Hungary in particular.

“It’s not about putting on a sweater at night, or turning down the heating a little or paying a bit more for gas, it’s about the fact that if there is no energy coming from Russia, Hungary will be left with no energy at all,” Orban said.

The backbone of the German economy – its industry – could “collapse” should Berlin decide to impose an embargo on Russian gas, the president of the country’s industry association has warned.

Appearing on the Maybrit Illner political talk show on Thursday, Siegfried Russwurm, the president of the Federation of German Industries (BDI), crossed swords with other guests who were calling for the immediate phasing out of Russian gas. Russwurm pointed out that should such an embargo be introduced, the implications would be immense, going far beyond a “speed limit” on highways and “recession and unemployment,” as the host suggested.

Without Russian gas, there would come a “virtual breakdown of our industrial networks,” the head of the BDI forecast. He added that at the moment it was impossible to put a price on the potential losses and give even a ballpark figure of how much it would cost the average German.

“We are talking about a completely different kind of collapse of our industry,” Russwurm argued, adding that Germany could see the disintegration of the very industry that it was “so proud of for seeing us through the Covid pandemic.”

On Saturday afternoon, a bright red tanker carrying 33,000 tonnes of Russian diesel sailed up the Thames and delivered its cargo in Grays, Essex.

Its arrival - which doesn't violate sanctions - highlights the UK's dependence on Russia, which supplies nearly a fifth of the country's diesel.
