The Jews were forcibly evicted from their lands centuries ago. When they started to return, they found squatters on their ancestral lands, who ran off, and now want to return to the lands they were squatting on. There were large Jewish communities in Damascus, Aleppo, Baghdad, Alexandria, Elephantine Island and Rome long before the birth of Christ.
 
One could equally ask why, before the 1967 war, the West Bank was Jordanian and the Gaza Strip and Sinai were Egyptian? Why was there no Palestine established in 1949, when the Arabs settled for the Green Line? The Partition Plan that started the war would have given the Arabs far more land but they wanted 100%. Palestine is part of the Baathist dream to have a Pan Arabian federation and the notion of an independent Palestine is a rallying call to the Arabs.
