In a clear sign that Berlin is softening its stance on tanks, Germany's Foreign Secretary told French TV station LCI that her government would "not stand in the way" of Poland.

Volodymyr Zelensky received a huge boost yesterday after Germany said it would "not stand in the way" of Poland sending tanks to Ukraine.

Poland's Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Sunday his country was ready to dispatch 14 German-made Leopard tanks to Kyiv, but was "waiting for a clear statement" from Berlin on whether it could transfer the heavy armour.

We spent 50 years planning for a huge war on the northern plains of Europe, but never got to test those war plans/strategies/weapons. Iraq did use Soviet weapons, but very out of date Soviet weapons used in limited quantities by poorly trained troops in a very environment than Europe. There were virtually no tank battles in Vietnam. Korea used WWII technology mostly.

So much will be learned by seeing how Western tanks fair against Russian tanks. And we will learn the most, because only the West knows how much more resources the West has than Ukraine.

Just a while ago the Zelenskies were chortling that tanks were useless against modern missiles. ' Javelin ' I believe was the ultimate tank-killer.
Now they want tanks ?

This is what you're up against now, Putin: How America's Abrams, Germany's Leopard 2 and Britain's Challenger compare to Russia's outdated T-72 tanks as they are sent to help defend Ukraine

The United States, Germany and more Western allies are poised to join Britain in sending heavy tanks to Ukraine in a move that could prove a gamechanger in Kyiv's war effort.

Washington is expected to send 30 of its fast-moving M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine, while Berlin will initially supply at least 15 Leopard 2 tanks and give permission to other NATO countries - including Poland, Finland and Denmark - to deliver their own to Kyiv.

Britain was the first NATO country to announce it would send 14 next-generation battle tanks to Ukraine in the form of the Challenger 2 tanks.

And French President Emmanuel Macron said on Sunday that he asked his defence minister to 'work on' the idea of sending some of France's Leclerc battle tanks to Ukraine.

Ukraine has been struggling to gain an advantage after battlefield successes as they have the same Soviet-era T-72 tanks that Russia has - meaning a delivery of Western tanks could be a gamechanger for Kyiv after 11 months at war.

Kyiv has pleaded for months for Western tanks that it says it needs to give its forces the firepower and mobility to break through Russian defensive lines and recapture territory.

Here MailOnline looks at how the West's tanks measure up against Russia's and what this might mean for Ukraine's war effort.

The best solution for the lowest casualties- the Russians destroy all the NATO armaments before they get to the front lines.

Those that don't care about the human cost will disagree. That includes, of course, arms manufacturers, arms dealers and assorted middlemen/cheerleaders.

Conventional thinking was tanks are dead, but people are beginning to rethink that. The Kornet(Russian equivalent of the Javelin) has proven ineffective even against smaller Soviet tanks. It is now thought that NATO tanks would be effective against them.

If Ukraine can punch through the Russian frontlines and breakout into the undefended rear, then they could capture a huge amount of territory quickly. I would not give the Ukrainians a good chance, but they at least have a real chance of winning this war with NATO tanks.

If that happens, the question becomes what next?

Have you seen the two types of tanks next to each other? T-72's look like they are half the size of NATO tanks. The Soviet hope was that greater numbers of smaller Soviet tanks would defeat the bigger NATO tanks. The problem with this theory is if tanks break through the frontlines, it is doubtful they will see large formations of enemy tanks. Also Russia does not have the tank numbers that the Soviets used to have.

I do not want to say anything definite, because it might be a dud, but this might be a game changer.
