It's the old debate of Herodotus vs. Thucydides. Herodotus believed the history should be about celebration, and made up shit in order to glorify his people. Thucydides was a realist, and acknowledge the faults of the society he lived in. You believe that America should ignore its faults and pursue mindless celebration. That's the core of the idea of "American exceptionalism", there's nothing at all exceptional about it, it's been believed by just about any people throughout history, the opiate of their most ignorant and useless members.
