how poverty effects you

I don't know if the original study is accurate or not, but I know from other things I've read that being poor can be a lot of work, and it is definitely stressful.

Heck, read Barbara Ehrenreich's book "Nickel and Dimed" where she actually went out and worked low-wage jobs. Not poverty, because she had jobs, but still very hard work and stressful.

I could imagine being in a state of constant stress would not be good for cognitive functioning, whether it's poverty or fighting in Iraq or whatever.

Well, I guess you have never been poor. You talk about things you know nothing about. You are one of those bored housewives who thinks they care about others, but haven't got the sense God gave a gopher.

Get out and do something. Stop your phony caring behind a laptop

That was a good read, though pretty depressing. But you can definitely be working & still be in poverty.
