Airstrip One
Completely Effed
Yea that was my late Uncles attitude when he came back from Vietnam where he served in the Marines. He said it was like the generals sat around a table and strategized...."Hmmm what can we do to lose this war." cause they just made decision after decision that was not in the best interest of winning the war. Vietnamization was an excellent example of that. Villagers don't like us? Take shots at us? Burn their fucking village down...that will win their hearts and minds!".
I didn't learn my dad was a Marine until I was 12. We got him to talk more about it in the years following the revelation. One time, he told me that with the way things were going in the following years, and I know that things were especially shitty in Seattle in 1969, that he was actually looking for job opportunities abroad in places like Australia.
It was actually a history teacher (who had been my sister's primary 6th grade teacher) who outed him, by guessing correctly that he probably served, and encouraging me to go home and ask him. An awkward silence ensued, because my dad came home late from work, and was busy sipping away at his soup, and ignoring my question.
