Well you would certainly be the foremost expert on that!
Look... The Patriot Act does not give the CIA and FBI any power they didn't already utilize on a regular basis. Since the days of J. Edgar, if the Government wants to know your business, they can and will get all in your koolaid, and they don't need your permission to do it. This measure was specifically designed to allow them access legally, to obtain specific information regarding terrorist activities in the US. They don't really give a shit if I am talking to my mistress about an illicit affair, but even IF they eavesdropped on such a conversation, what "right" have they really violated? If me and the mistress aren't planning to fly a plane into a building, what difference does it make?
We go to the airports, and have literally every personal possession scrutinized, including our own bodies, and you could say our "rights" are being violated there... but the alternative is for all of us to get on a plane without any real security measure, just take your chances that you may die at the hands of a terrorist. Is that acceptable? In the name of "not violating our rights" do we stupidly restrict common sense security measures designed to protect us? No, because most of us realize it is important for them to be able to screen passengers and at least make an attempt to stop nefarious activity. The only real difference in the Patriot Act is, it's far less intrusive and inconvenient. You don't even know they are checking you out! Would I like it better if they didn't need to do this? Of course! Just as I would like it better if we could board an airplane without a body cavity search!
The Patriot Act doesn't violate your rights, it helps protect your Constitutional right to LIFE! It helps the Government do what it is charged with doing, protect the American people against a very real threat. This is why Bush signed it into law, and why Obama renewed it! This is why a Republican congress passed it, and a Democrat congress didn't rescind it!
