aug 27 2018 Four teenagers were killed after a group of teenagers helping to push a broken-down SUV along an Indiana highway were struck by another vehicle on Saturday, officials said.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department told WRDB that officials responded just after 11 p.m. to a crash in Cortland, located about 60 miles north of Louisville.

Cara Selby, 37, was driving nine children, ages 12-16, to a slumber party around 11 p.m. when her Chevrolet Suburban broke down about a block from the home on state Route 258.

The group of children got out to push the SUV the rest of the way when they were hit behind by another vehicle driven by 24-year-old Elizabeth Watson, police said.

Some years back, an idiot that I used to work for; rear ended a car that was out of gas and being pushed by an older gentleman, while his wife steered.

The collision resulted in both of his legs being amputated.

When it went to Court, the couple asked the Judge not to sentence him to prison; because if he went, they would never be able to collect a lawsuit against him.

The Judge agreed and after the lawsuit was heard, they received a million dollars and he had to provide the Court with receipts for anything he purchased and it was ordered that he was only able to purchase "necessities", no TV's, no vacations, NOTHING; receipts for EVERYTHING, EVERY DOLLAR ACCOUNTED FOR AND HE HAD TO BE GAINFULLY EMPLOYED.

As far as I know, he's still paying this off and probably will die, before it's finished.

That said, my cousin who was working for the highway department was gellified when he was helping a stranded motorist with flares and the warning markers out because some old man was just so zoned out none of it registered with him. Didn't even put on the brakes and kept going awhile before his brain even processed that he had just hit someone.

That's an interesting story though i must say the punishment seems extreme even to me. Pushing a car down a road is pretty dumb and it seems to me the victim was at fault too.

Police report showed that the emergency lights had been on and they were in the emergency lane.
He was DUI, had a bad problem in doing this, and it finally caught up with him.
Witnesses said he had been swerving and didn't even hit his brakes.

If there was reason to believe it was anything but an accident, I trust the professionals we pay to assess such evidence would have acted on it. Could be unlit road with hilly sections that hid the stalled vehicle from the drivers view until it was too late to react in time. Did the driver of the broken down vehicle put out a flare or any other kind of warning?
