She seems to have lied to him about her criminal past. He seems to be under the impression it was a youthful indiscretion and seemingly only involved writing a bad check.

The BBC article reports she was convicted of grand theft and spent two years in prison. That seems like a little more than writing a bad check.

She was also deported and then re-entered the country that is a felony
