HILLARY CLINTON’S presidential campaign may have hit another road bump after the Clinton foundation’s actions during the response to the 2010 Haiti earthquake were revealed.
International efforts to help the nation after it was devastated by the quake and at least 52 aftershocks are being thrown under the microscope over suspicions some were given special treatment. The Clinton Foundation in particular is now being scrutinised over suggestions it may have given its friends special treatment.
ABC News has released e-mails showing the State Department assisted friends of the Clintons in facilitating government contracts and aid groups. The expose includes e-mails identifying people as “FOB” (friends of Bill Clinton) or “WJC VIPs” (William Jefferson Clinton VIPs) in the wake of the deadly 2010 earthquake in Haiti. The correspondence shows Friends of Bill Clinton were flagged for special treatment by the State Department, while others who offered aid were redirected to a general government website.
Clinton Foundation donor Denis O’Brien is mentioned in the e-mails. When the 2010 earthquake hit, his Jamaica-based telecom firm Digicel wanted to fly supplies into Port-au-Prince and get his employees out. An e-mail from Amitabh Desai, director of foreign policy for the Clinton Foundation, was titled “Close friend of Clintons” and referred to Mr Clinton by his initials WJC. Mr Desai wrote: “This WJC VIP just called again from Jamaica to say Digicel is being pushed by US Army to get comms back up but is not being cleared by [the U.S. government] to deploy into Haiti to do so.” Caitlin Klevorick, a senior State Department official then pushed up the chain of command by the e-mail’s recipient.
