I have to admit I had serious misgivings about a propagandist moderating the debate. It beggers the question who will be next? Rachel Maddow? Joseph Goebbels?
However Wallace did a decent job of keeping the joint press conference on track.
In all I thought I thought the first debate was clearly the best debate by far. By and large the moderator did what a moderator is supposed to do. Ask a question and then stay out of the way and only intervening to assure that they stay on topic and don't shout over each other and that both participants get equivalent speaking time.
That is what a debate is supposed to be and the first debate came closest to that.
The other two debates were really joint press conferences with a journalist asking questions and the candidates responding.
In that regards Lester Holt unquestionably was the best moderator of the three debates as he did the best job of staying out of the way.

That's because Trump exceeded his time limits. Holt did do some fact checking and that was a mistake and he was correctly criticized for that. By and large Holt moderated and let the candidates talk and question each other. This is what a debate moderator is supposed to do. It isn't supposed to be a press conference. Did Wallace manage a press conference better? Yes he did but this supposed to be a debate and not a press conference.
